I have a 1979 F150 4x4 300 I6 4spd and i was wondering what T case I have and what type of fluid to use in it. I put 80w90 and i was wondering if i'm right. any info appreiciated
Typically there will be a metal tag on the front side of the T-case toward the bottom that will identify the model but sometimes these are missing. Can you tell us what your t-case shift pattern is? I believe these used the NP203 but I'm not 100% sure on that. We can figure it out with the shift pattern though.
its a part time T case with 4low Neutral 2 Hi and 4 hi i believe its a 205 but i just want to make sure its not a 208 because the 208 takes atf and i put gear lube in mine.
You can run SAE 80-90 Oil in the 203 and 205 transfer case's but the 208 and Borg Warner T-case's use Automatic Transmission Fluid, preferrable Dexcon II
Do not run synthetic oils in any transfer case unless the manufacturer recommends it, and Ford doesn't recommend synthetic....
If yours is part time, its definetly an NP (New Process) 205 series. There were a couple different versions of the same case. They were all the same as far as capacity, and fluid recommendation.

You are not suposed to run 80-90 oil in a 203! You are suposed to run 30w motor oil only. It has a differintial section in it and it's not suposed to have a gear oil run in it, ever.
Yeah you have a NP205 transfer case. 203s and 205s were the only t cases used in out trucks, 203 being full time chain driven, and 205 part time gear driven. 208s weren't used before 1980.

I've been using it for quite awhile and makes no difference, especailly on the 205 i got under my Truck. People suggest motor oil some prefer 80-90.
You can look in a owners manual, check out the internet, etc... Your not suposed to run 80w90 in a 203, just 30w. A 205 is suposed to run a gear oil like 80w90, not motor oil.
I have both and I've check this out before and verified it with many reliable sorces.
