9 inch rearend

got a question. Are all nine inch rear ends the same? Heres what i mean. took the rearend off my 79 f-150 and took out the third member when i went to get a gasket the parts guy told me the 10 bolt pattern matched up with a 70 something ranchero. I realized they made different widths but assumed the third members were all the same. My mistake or his? I knew someone had changed the gearing in the rear to 4.56 but apparently maybe the whole thing as well. If so any other oddball features i need to know about. Any help appreciated. Thanks

9 inch rearend

To the best of my knowledge, it was his mistake.

9 inch rearend

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Nov-02 AT 11:02 AM (EST)]all 9 inch rearends since 1957 take the same gasket. so he was right, a 70 something ranchero gasket will fit a 79 ford truck. now that being said, there are two different gaskets on the market. one has two notches on the inner edge so it can also be used with a 9 3/8 rear end. on a 9 inch either one is fine but the 9 3/8 requires the two notches to clear the ring gear (yes, you can just trim the gasket to fit). hawkrod
