So i'm getting a 1987 ford bronco with the 5.0l 302 in it. it has lsd 4x4, i was told it has a posi traction rear end not sure what that is hehe. The motor is a rebuilt one with only 18k miles. So my question is what are my performance options. I kind of want to stick with the 302 because it has only 18k miles in it. I am open to all options just upgrading the 302 , swaps, stroking, or including crazy ones like swapping in a V10. If you could give me some options as detailed as possible. My main goal is just to be able to haul A$$ down the street but i will be pulling a light boat from time to time, and i do hunt so will be going offroading some too. Gas mileage is a mild concern. Thanks for the help, all ideas appreciated.
Well, you've left that pretty much wide open...how deep is your wallet? There are a ton of things that can be down to improve the 302, or you can bump up to a 351W. I don't think you'd have an easy time stuffing a V10 in there but hey, with a big enough hammer and a crowbar, anything can be made to fit!
Another option might be swapping in a 460, but this forum deals with the Windsor series of engines, so any advice you get here will probably be centered around that.
You could build a stroker 351W to swap in that should meet all your criteria, but I would be partial to upgrading the 302 since it's relatively fresh and already in place. Just stick around, there'll be some more suggestions thrown at you soon enough! -TD
well that 302 is probably efi running speed density so your cam selection is very limited. you can install headers, edelbrock truck efi intake , bbk 56mm throttle body and get some aluminum heads like edelbrocks or afr being the best. so since that motor is so fresh those mods are probably realistic. anything else at this point would be throwing money away unless you have alot to do so. just remember that the bronco weights between 5-6k lbs. its not a racer by any means so dont treat it as such. buy a car for that.
if you plan to lift it and run larger tires remember that Gears will be a must. general census is 31" can be run on stock . 33's need 4.10's. 35's figure 4.56 or 4.88 if you tow and play off road more. running anything larger then those sizes will do havock to them axles and drivetrain.
