Driving at night seems to be a problem for me with this truck.. i can hardly see. Anyone recommend a upgraded headlgith for my truck? Also, i'm thinking about getting one of those grill protector bars that wraps around the front of the truck, would getting extra lgiths put on that help any?
You could replace the headlight lenses with a set of clear diamond/euro ones, and get some different bulbs. I suggest the KAT high intesity bulbs, or the PIAA super white headlights. The PIAA's very a little, but I like to get the ones that I think are 75w on low beams, and 100w on high beams. Also, think about installing a set of aftermarket driving or clear fog lights. They make a huge difference.
Try the Lazer Blue bulbs. Supposedly they they dont really put out more light, but the blue light shows more defintion between objects that the standard ones.
I love the headlights on my '99 F-150. They are far superior to the ones my '99 Ranger had. With the high beams on, its almost as if you are driving in daylight.
Octane
I haven't had much luck with the blue lights. They are okay in good weather, but in inclement weather, they look like they are not even on. When I had my Super Duty, I drove it for a year, and put 25,000 miles on it, mostly in the dark, and I never replaced the wiring harness. I had the PIAA high watt light bulbs, and had no problems at all. I have also had them in several of my other vehicles, I didn't replace the wiring harness on any of them, and never had any problems. Also, talk about being daylight, my Jeep Grand Cherokee had the PIAA 100whigh beams, KATZ 100w driving lights, KC 100w off road lights, and KC 150w off road lights, all hooked into my high beams. That was almost beyond daylight.
If you would be willing to replace the entire light assembly, not just the bulb, I'd look into something like APC's projection headlights. Suppose to be good. I've got stock headlights with Hella 500 series driving lights hooked up to the highbeams. I plan on gettin some aftermarket fog lights also.
I was just thinking about the new stuff they now sell that is suppose to clear the cloudiness up on plastic head lights cost about 30.00 $ I have seen it in the thrifty nickel and in JC Whitney.
My question is has anybody tried this stuff before? and if so how does it work?
I bought a pair of the projector type replacement headlights off eBay and found that the low beam projector was 10 times worse than stock...way out of focus. The highbeam reflector is tiny, but al least focused. Less mirror area equals less reflected/focused light through the lens.
Other problem is that the pins that hold and aim the aftermarket headlight housing didn't line up with the stock mounts....haven't found a way to ape them to fit...too narrow spacing. If you find a brand of eBay that fits, let us know!
Meanwhile, I replaced the stock headlight plugs and wiring with 14g wire, and installed relays for low and high beam...the key is to tap both + straight off the alternator + terminal for the least voltage drop. Also take the ground from the alt case. Be sure to fuse the hot wire as close to the alt connection as possible. 1-2 volts drop in a 12 volt system is a big difference in light output.
I still want more light, and will be installing some bi-xenon projectors used on newest MB SL500's, etc into the stock housings soon. They are excellent and only draw 35 watts. I have some pics of how I did it on my old Grand Wagoneer headlights.
If you want the KING of all lights - spend you about a $1000 and you'll never have any complaints again.
For the headlights - buy the Sylvania Xenarc HID Headlight assemblies by Visteon - complete new clear headlights assemblies with real high intensity discharge lights and ballasts. They are great - I can see anything with them. You can buy them for around $500 various places on the net. I've even seen them as low as $350.
I also spent another $500 and upgraded my foglights to 9005 bulbs - but I bought a complete HID kit for them also. So HID foglights and headlights are definately a bright way to go. You can buy these kits of Ebay. The Xenarc assemblies are hard to find - they quit making them, they were so hight I don't guess they went over very well. Definately worth the money I spent on mine though - I've had them for a year and a half with two different F-150s and I love them.
Are the lenses still good? I'm replacing the one's on my '99 soon because of haze (tried to polish them, but didn't get like-new results). I'm using the silverstars with good results, but they aren't any better in the rain (or wet street) than the stock bulbs. I put some cheapo autozone driving lights behind the grill hooked to the highbeams, big difference (definately worth 30 bucks, but upgrade the wiring). gonna get some projector fogs soon to help in the wet.
Anybody else upgraded the factory headlight harness?
I'm a HID convert also. That's why I'm trying to get as much as I can from the stock lights...but will be converting to HID soon.
Talked to a supplier of the original Xenarc's for the F150 and am told that a bi-xenon projector version (uses a servo motor to move the low-beam cut-off sheild up or down for high and low beam switching) will be out by Christmas, for a lot of $$$. It is supposed to fit the same as the X2010 part number kit.
