Flushing a 460...
How is everone out there? I have done some 200K miles on my '94 460 and was thinking on flushing the motor inards with one of those off the shelf, do it your self, zip, bam, boom, yep its clean fluids. Are these "motor/engine flushes" good for anything, or are they they just mumbo jumbo. Also is there any risk of future damage as a consequence of using one of these flushes, like mesh clogging. Thanks.
P.S.
By the way... ford-truck.com rules !!!
Most of the engine flushes are essentially a solvent or detergent and will clean out sludge etc, but you run the risk of getting too much sludge into the oil faster than the filter can eat it, or more than the filter can handle in one sitting. So if you use a flush follow directions and presumably drain it ASAP and run good detergent oil and probably drain again soon.
If your engine doesn't have a lot of gunk in it, then the flush is probably no problem. Sometimes you can look thru the oil fill hole to determine how much gunk is in the engine. You should be able to see varnish and any sludge sitting in the head.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
Thanks for all the help. I have been reading some of the labels and although I will be cautious of what I do, I will have a look through the oil fill and that might give me an overall idea of what is going on inside. If I do flush, I think I will go for the extremely mild side and use something like Rislone or similar to prevent any large chunks from falling off and clogging a major artery. Heck, I've always used oils with detergent so it can't be that bad. Thanks again.
