I have a 2000 Expy with 80k miles. I have never changed the trans fluid like it should have been. Is it to late, should I leave it alone or change it? I have heard if you wait to long then its worse to change it. Thanks for the advise.
One more question, I pull a small RV(pop-up) with it, would a trans cooler be a good thing to add? Thanks.
too late? thats like saying its too late to change your oil... go ahead and change it. How much towing do you do? a pop up trailer is not that heavy... I would consider something like this, pretty cheap... a larger pan that allows to hold up to 4 more quarts of trani fluid, helps with the cooling a little. http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...96&prmenbr=361
Problems arise with changing fluid on hard worked and neglected vehicles. What happens is the trans fluid breaks down and the tranny components where out over time. Changing to new "stronger" fluid ends up making these worn components fail, which they were going to do soon anyway. Bottom line is, change the fluid. If the tranny fails, it was going to fail soon anyway. And if it doesn't, then now you have new fluid which will prolong the life of the tranny.
As for the cooler, an auxilary cooler is almost always a good thing to add.
I change at 30k. Make sure you change the fluid in the torque converter as well as the transmission. You will probably find a decent amount of black clutch material in the pan. Transmissions do wear out.
