hey I have a '82 F-150 4x4 shortbed that I'm fixing up and as a near the bodywork I'm am thinking of shaving the driprails that run just above the door. Has anyone here done this. what's negative about it, would the door leak when it rains. I think it would clean up the cab alot being that the driprail is just over the door and looks kinda ugly.
I have never done one, nor been a witness to one that had the rails shaved. I would think if you really look at the way the water will run off of the roof at the rails and picture what it will do if they are gone, that could help you make your decison. Nothing worse than a leaky vehicle. If it can be done , and water leaks are not going to be a problem, then all you have to deal with then is, getting a good mig weld job, properly treated welds so they wont rust thru from the back later, and a good finished metal job so that the new paint will not show the alterations. good luck. jmo
This might give you a idea of what shaved drip rails would look like, thou this is on a 79. The upper part of the rail is cut off, the skin is rewelded, the rear part of the rail had its spot welds drilled out..
heres the inside the door jamb just for the heck of it

wow, that some nice work there ! I wish I had known you were so close to my town, you could have painted mine and saved me from doing my own and having too much money and hard work in to it !
Just my opinion here, but I do not feel the elimination of the rain gutter adds that much to bettering the 79's appearance. The gaskets on the 79 are not designed to handle water coming in from above that much, unlike the newer trucks that have the door going up in to the roof , with multiple folds in the door gasket to "gutter" the water down and out. I dont think I would trade out the possibilty of water coming in to my truck, for the look of the shaved rails. Just my two pennies though.

That truck belongs to a bud of mine. He bought it for 100 bucks.. guy said it didnt run, we put a ignition module on it, and drove it home! He's since put alot of work into it, like..a new roof! Still have to fix the bed, floors and cab mounts (From the roof leaking)
I dont know about the door leaking, he's not got it all back together yet.. We're hopin soon thou, I keep workin on my '75 Highboy (Project Monster Tigger)
