1999 7.3 F250, 3.73 gears, factory stock except for helper springs and NAPA Gold air filter. 131k miles
Fuel mileage of 18 to 23.5, running empty at 65 on Texas Interstates without trailer. 11 - 14 (wind and terrain considered) with 12000 pound gooseneck or 6000 pound enclosed cargo trailer running 62 to 65.
Oil consumption is 1/2 to 1 quart between changes which are at 5000 miles. The oil is still transparent enough to read the dip stick at 5000 miles.
With the above said: Would I gain from the CCV mod? How about the air filter change? Any comments about the weight of the trailer? The truck handles it just fine but I have been wondering.
i'm not familier with the NAPA gold air filter, but i run the "Kwik" filter setup on my '95. the CCV mod wouldn't help on your MPG, just on keeping the intercooler clean of oil residue and the possible blow-off of intercooler boots.
on second thought, the '99 DOES have an intercooler right? i can't recall...
where you located in Texas? your gettin darn good milage, i get about 20.5 keeping it at 70 on I-10 with the truck empty...5 speed.
i think the ccv might cut down on oil consumption a little... maybe... it couldn't hurt to have just air going in your mule, especially in the texas heat...! as for potential benefits... the best one would be that your intercooler and tubes would not have any more oil mist condensing inside them... i plan on taking mine of and cleaning them out some day soon when i have the time..! as for the rest of your truck... keep the fluids and filters changed and run her...!
Currently residing in Central Texas, about 30 miles south of Cisco, off I-20. As for oil mist, good point. I'll get the mod done ASAP. I thought it might help on MPG by reducing crankcase back pressure ????
Fluid changes: Is the Ford recommended interval cast in stone or is it acceptable to go longer on all but oil? I don't have the $$ to do it as often as Ford recommends. Every 65k miles is my target. (Coming due next oil change).

Bearswatchin' I have the exact same year as yours, same transmission, everything except mine is a F-550. Love the truck, but I want to give you a little heads up before it happens to you. There was a weakness in the design of the transfer case that causes premature failure. 4x4 only, I don't know if you have a 4x4 or not, but here is the thread that I started on the subject. I still think it's a great truck and in the aftermath it was a very easy fix. The tow bill cost more than the repair! https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=393461
Kwikkordead;
not a 4X4. Not much reason in this part of the state or in my useage of the truck for that much UMPH! (Did I spell that right?) I do sometimes wish for the 550, just because of the weight of my big trailer.
So far, the only problem I have had with the truck is a minor oil leak around the trubo, somewhere. Fixed before warranty ran out. I have gotten some bad fuel, apparently, and have had a real problem with that but otherwise, GREAT truck! search for "shaking on the road" for the fuel problem.
Cisco eh? i've hunted a ranch a couple times somewheres near Brady. beautiful land up there. i'm east Bexar county ouside san antonio, hopefully in the next year near poteet/pleasanton area
couldn't tell ya about MPG improved by decreasing crankcase backpressure. i don't think it wold make that much of a difference other than maybe less oil consumption as Johnny said.
yeah, i hear ya about fuel costs. i've done all i can to my truck aside from a chip/injectors/propane to help with milage. can't afford any of those right now....whats your diesel runnin up there right now? my Flying J off 10 is 2.13 right now. gonna fill up before headin up to Inks lake for a few days tomorrow.
bearswatchin,
on my ccv hose mod, I turned the ccv housing around so exit hole at rear of valve cover put the elbow in there and attached heater hose w/ clamp and coupling and ran down and along inside of frame and tie wrapped and then exit. Works great.. no smell at all when in the truck...
hope this helps with ideas.

RE: diesel price - 2.35 to 2.41 depending on where. Flying J is probably about 10 cents less but it is 60 miles. Loves is around the same as Flying J but is about 50 miles. Remember the rock and the hard place? That's where we are.
Thanks for the picture of the ccv mod and suggestions, Big Red
I have same truck also F350 6 speed but with 4 wd Are you talking about 65000 on trany oil change? I wouldn't recomend that towing that big trailer. Know a guy that was doing same thing and went through 3 tranies before putting a cooler on it. The gallon or so of atf isn't that expensive. I know on mine I change Tranie and Transfer case every 30000 and transfercase is pretty dark. The rear ends are quite costley with that synthetic oil and friction reducer but those are recomended @ 100k. Fuel filters aren't bad through fleet filters around $18.
All in all pretty cheap insurance not to be broke down in the weeds next to the Hwy
Hey Kwikkordead what did you find in your transfer case was it the shift fork? You say not too costly but P.I.T.A. to change or easy?
lonepineron, the tranny is a 6 speed manual which takes a lot more than the gallon of atf to change. I forget the exact cost but it was around $300 for transmission and rearend plus engine oil change.

It was the shift fork, completly worn out.
In the aftermath it turned out to be a very easy repair. Takes all of 20 minutes to pull the unit and maybe 30 to reinstall.
I added some more pictures and info to that thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=393461
