Problems after long drive (long read)

I drove the truck for about 40 minutes, then drove it again for about an hour. There was maybe 10 minutes of sitting time in between. But when I started the truck for the second portion of the drive (the hour), it started really rough before smoothing out. It drove fine (hwy speeds) until I exited, then it died. I couldn't get is started. I pushed it to the side and tried again and it started. It was running like crap and missing really bad, like it was out of gas. I got it over to the gas station and let it sit for a minute. It started right up and ran fine. Drove it down the road and it did it again. I had to leave it this time. My dad gave me a ride to the gas station because I thought the back fuel pump was toast. When we got back, the truck fired up fine. I switched between the front tank and the rear tank and it ran fine. I parked it and drove another 30 minutes that night. I have driven over an hour since then, but I'm scared it will do it again. What is this?

Thanks,
Benji

Sounds like you have a malfunctioning sensor somewhere. Can you pull the codes and tell us what you find?

Have you had any recent work done to it? Has it been running good for a long time? It's never done anything like this before? Also, year, model, motor and tranny would be good info to post.

It does seem like it could be a fuel pump problem, but do check for codes too. Fuel pumps can quit and then work again after a while when they are about to quit for good. It could also be a malfunctioning ignition module or distributor pickup. If it does it again, check to see if you are getting spark and check to be sure there is proper fuel pressure, so that you can narrow it down to being a fuel problem, or an ignition problem, or neither of the two.

Check signature for truck info. I just bought the truck not too long ago, so I don't know if it's been doing this for awhile. Thanks for the responses, I'll check everything if it does it again.

Thanks,
Benji

I would start by checking codes and changing the fuel filter.
