There is a spring that holds shift cam in position, which prevents the shift cam from moving on its own, so the case doesnt shift by itself. This spring looks like a piece of wire in sort of an S shape. With this in position, the shift cam is very hard to move by hand. Well, pretty hard, maybe not very hard. If this is really warn, I guess the case could shift on its own, although when it did the shifter inside the truck would move also.
There is another a spring in the lockup collar that pushes the lockup hub into position and engages 4wd. This is so that when you shift into 4wd when you are moving, the gears have a half turn or so to mesh with each other before they engage.
To see where the problem is, put it into 2wd, keep the shift cam where it is, and move the parts around to try to make it shift into 4wd without moving the shift cam. (because it should not shift into 4wd if the shift cam doesnt move). Try to move the shift fork, the lockup hub, the lockup collar. Its a little hard with the case apart, because some of the parts move a little, like the shift rail, but not impossible. You need to figure out why it was going into 4wd by itself.
everything seems to be working correctly. I see no metal shavings. The spring seems a little worn so i will replace that but other than that, I don't know what could have caused the vibration.
Can low fluid cause the vibration in the driveshaft?
well, theoretically, if it was low low on fluid, the sprocket for on the output shaft for the front wheel drive chain, could heat up from friction, and begin to catch and make the chain spin every now and then, spinning and sliippin, and vibrating. unlikely, but could happen
I just can't figure out what is wrong. It looks ok. There was fluid but it is possible that it was a little low, I didn't really watch it all drain out. I hate to put it back together with only changing one spring but I can't see anything else wrong.
