i hate when my good 'ol wife enjoys reminding me of the FORD Saying - Fix OR Repair Daily
I just need to know the color of the wires i need to hook up to the alternator and to the Voltage Regulator. 3 wires attach to the back. 1 bolts on, two clip on. Where and What color wires go the alternator and connect to where. After reading off and on since 9 this morning, i cannot find the thread that had the colors of the wires. i know you guys are very knowledgeable in these trucks, so i'm wondering if someone can respond with a quick answer. i don't want to burn anything out anymore.
i'm hoping its just the regulator, i do have a spare alternator thats been tested and it's fine. I did find that my negative battery cable was pretty loose. i will be checking all grounds, cleaning if necessary. charge battery. i will replace my cables this next payday.
(when the truck died, i only got a single click. a jump from a friend didn't help)
1.The largest wire goes on the middle of the three terminals with a lug connector and nut.
2. The brown or orange looking wire with the red press connector goes on the terminal closest the #1.
3. The white wire with a black cap goes on the remaining press terminal furthest from #1.
Regulator 4 pin slide connector buss: Left to Right, connector facing up:
1: N/C
2: Yellow
3. Green w/ red stripe
4: orange (red?)
This is a physical take-off from a 77 F150 & a 78 F250. It does not agree with what Chilton's has published in one of my books, but the trucks have been fine for years. Does this seem correct to your application?
thanks for the replies. Ecuri- thanks for the wire colors. i think that is what i'm looking for. i'll check tonight. ran into another problem. i was checking my loose ground connection and found that the bolt had broken- explaining why the wire came loose. Now i have another small project to work on- frustrating. in the end it'll all work out- i hope.
i have the diagrams. i have both a Haynes and chiltons manual. not sure how to read those though. thanks again for the quick replies.
Does any one know which wire in the engine compartment goes to the amp meter guage. I made an alternator change and the amp guage hasn't worked since.
Doc
Gas Hog, There is a big harness between the starter solenoid and the fire wall that should have the amp guage wire in it. I need to figure out which wire in that harness has the right wire. I no longer have a voltage regulator mounted on the radiator support.

If you plan on following the wires or inspecting wires for electrical shorts, get a utility blade slice the black tape on the electrical wires and then just peel back the tape. The Haynes and Chiltons Manuals (Manual) will have the colors of the wires.
For example, you wanted to verify the condition of a wire from the alternator to the voltage requlator. Refer to the Manual for the color of wires running from the alternator to the voltage regulator (reg.). Then follow that wire from alt. to reg. and visual, and by hand inspect the wire for damage. Suspecting there was a electrical short.
Sometimes the wire from the starter solenoid to the alternator, which is the main positive wire will deterioate at the conjution where the wires meet. Check that connection for good contact. Always clean and solder any electrical wires. Never take chance with the crimp on connectors. They come loose when your out there fourwheeling or on bumpy roads.

I think I need to replace the wiring from my New Alt. to my new Battery cause I'm only getting 12.5 volts when running and 12.0 when there is a full load.(AC on) is this hard to do? I'll follow your instuctions about the Hayes manual. cause I have one..
Hey Mil1ion.. would you have a diagram for a 93 Ford Ranger Super cab 4.0 6Cyl. AC..
so I might be able to follow this better?
it always amazes me how helpful it is for people , when we get help from members like million, with ford diagrams etc.thanks to all of you that post these diagrams,it makes it easier to figure things out when you can see the way things should go together.
