Question C4 Transmission problems

I finally got my Effie running over the weekend. But I think I have some problems in the transmission department.

I beleive it is a C4 box, but cant be exactly sure as I have never worked or even seen one before. There is a Hurst shifter on the floor.

I suspect that it has not been run for a long time. It seems that there is no drive (i.e movement) until the revs get up to about 1500-2000 (Hard to tell, as I dont have a Rev counter). When I select reverse, it seems to have a nasty vibration until the gear is selected then it seems to jump into gear with a bit of a crunch!

I checked the Transmission fluid level and that appears to be ok.

Anyone got any ideas what may be wrong, or things that I can check?

p.s I got my first catalogue through today. wow, there are lots of very cool items to get for these old effies...

Thanks
Lee

What color is the tranny fluid? Trannys that sit for a long time can get pretty crudded up and work pretty rough. You may just need a fluid and filter change. Is it leaking? The seals may have gotten hard.

The rough shifting could be the torque converter. Or, it could be the modulator needs resetting to lower the shift point, rpm-wise.

I would take it to a tranny guy, have it serviced and get his recommendations.

Randy's right, if its been sitting for along length of time things could be gummed up, maybe a valve is sticking.

If all else fails and you have to pull it out the C4 isn't too nasty to play with and needs no special tools for dissassembly or reassembly. I bought a 67 Mustang years ago that came with two C4's..long story short..it took both trannys to make one that worked. Witha basic book you shouldn't have too much trouble.

I always keep a good stock of catalogs in the reading room (bathroom) Love to look at everything that is available

Cheers Randy/Bobby,

I will have a good look at the fluid first and check for leaks etc. Its all a bit messed up under the truck at the moment. I plan to get the Jet washer out some time this week and give it all a good clean off underneath, so that I can actually see whats going on.

How many bolts does the pan have? That's a good way to tell what kind of transmission you are dealing with.

Don't mean to sound too simplistic, but you are making sure the trans is warm and ran thru the gears a few times before checking fluid level I hope.

Lee, here are several links that may help inidentifying the trans. Good luck with the pressure washer. Whenever I used one all I end up doing is transferring all the gunk from the truck onto myself. Its amazing that however you hold the wand it will alsways spray right back into your face.....lol

Best just drive it a bit - I had a C6 that fixed itself - just changed fluid and added a can of seal softener and drove the heck out of it. Once it got good and hot it started to shift better and the oil leaks dried up in the first 500 miles. I changed the fluid again then and added one more can.

Five years later it is still in service - my brother is using it on his farm and it has never had anything else done to it.

Also, if you don't know the truck, someone may have put a high stall tourqe converter in - I don't know how they work but they do require you to race your engine before they turn the rear wheels. Someone here can explain it better.

Thanks All,

I have a lot to look at.

Based on all the excellent feedback, I think that I will try the following. Drop the fluid and filter and replace with new. Then try running it for a while as per WillyB's suggestion. I like the idea of it just needing a good run, for a couple of reasons.
1. Cost and
2. lack of requirement to pull everything apart. I can but hope.

Joe, not simplistic at all. but as the truck has been laid up for an undetermined amount of time and I am not yet sure of the status of the brakes, I have not been able to give it a run to warm it up or get it through the gears. I guess I need to overhaul the brakes first then take it for a spin.

Thanks For the links Bobby, that should make my life a lot easier in determining exactly what the trans is.
I know exactly what you mean re the Pressure washer. I bought myself a top to toe waterproof after getting most of the crud all over myself the first time I used it.

Cheers
Lee

Lee, you don't have to drive it. Just run it thru the gears with the motor idling. Joe

C6 Transmission problems

Thanks Joe,

I actually managed to get a steam cleaner on the underside this evening. I took my small pressure washer only to find out that the shop where I have my track have a massive industrial High pressure steam cleaner.

It made short work of all of the old oil, crud and what ever else was stuck under the truck.

I have now found that the Transmission is a C6 not a C4. and I think thta you are right Joe. I ran it for a while in each gear and it looks very low on fluid.

Do you have to take the sump pan off to drain the fluid from the trans? I could not see a drain plug anywhere.

I also noticed that there is a vacuum pipe from the engine down to the back of the Transmission that looks decidedly dodgy, in that it is hanging off and certainly not making a seal.

I am not sure if I can source a new filter here in the UK quickly, so I am considering just filling up with new fluid. is this a bad idea? should I wait until I can get a new filter too?

Thanks
Lee

If it were me I would fill it with Type F trans fluid, warm it up, run it thru the gears [with your foot on the brake, or somehow insuring the vehicle can't move] ]and try it for engagement. Maybe jack up the rear and gently let it spin a bit. If it seems to be functioning, then change filter. Maybe you get lucky, maybe not. Joe

If you do change the filter, be sure to drain the torque converter by removing the plug in it. There may be a plate on the lower bellhousing you can remove to access it.
