DIY engine oil bypass filter?

anybody out there built their own bypass filter setup for their strokes? i have been think about doing one. really would be simple. just find a filter from an OTR truck and the base that fits it then do up some lines with crimp on hydralic fittings. but what i am interested in is what filter number and brand you used. and if you have a number for the base. i have found a couple of combinations but i am having a hard time finding out what the bypass filter filters down to. i would like to get one that filter down one micron.

any info would be great.
thanks
tim

I'm in the process of building a Baldwin system using their OB1305 and B164 spin-on lube oil bypass filters.

Will post more when it's completed, with photos in my gallery. So far, this has been very reasonable, cost and time-wise. I get to pick the location this way, too, as I can have the lines built any length.

Looking forward to seeing that! Happen to know the micron rating of the filter?

Baldwin says, "Absolute 15". There isn't a nominal on the B164's, but the rep I talked to told me that if there was a "nominal" it would be 2-3.

Since I'm such a great believer in all their other products, and have been for over forty years, I suspect I wouldn't care. If they say it'll do the job, it will. They have the premier long-term reputation in the diesel industry.

Y'know, with all the hype about the AMS system being so great, I believe Baldwin is their supplier for lube filtration. Draw "whatever" conclusions from that.

Looking forward to seeing your results. I'm looking into putting in a bypass system, but I too thought it didn't look that complicated.

I did a lot of research on this subject several years ago as I was concerned about my race engines. I talked to several filter reps, metalurgist, etc and the best information I could get was that anything below 7 micron will abosolutly NOT hurt anything inside a combustion engine. All the filter reps said that "their" filter far exceeded that, but would not say how far they exceeded that mark. I believe that as long as the bypass doesn't open and run unfiltered oil, our engines are safe. That being said, I have always run dual filters just in case one "plugged" even for a second, the second would catch anything coming through.

Anybody know, off-hand, what sizes the two engine plugs are? I can pull them to be sure, but then I just gotta' put them back in to get to the hose fabricator's shop. They look to be 1/4" NPT.

Anybody know for sure?

BTW, I put some preliminary photos in my gallery for anyone who's interested.

spingerpop i am not sure what size they are but i think you are right but may be 1/8 pipe. one thing i did find when i was researching doing my own bypass system was that many use a very small orfice to meter oil flow. they were any where from .095 to .032 of an inch. that much smaller than i would have figured. i thought maybe the filter would be enough restriction. other wise you could pull too much volume from the pump.

i also wanted to find a filter that filter down to 1 micron as amsoil and oil guard advertise but nobody seem to be able to help. i talked to balwin, wix, fleetguard, and donaldson.

hope that info helps

Got it finished. Used #4 teflon hose, stainless braid covered, and covered that with the plastic wire "loom" that Ford uses everywhere. Pressure side is 40 inches long, with straight fittings on both ends. The return is 46 inches, with straight on one end and 90 degree on the other. Adapters are straight 1/8" male NPT into, and 90 degree out of, the filter base. Also, 1/8" straight male NPT for the pressure port out of the block, and the return to the block is 3/8 male NPT.

Cost for the hoses and wire looming was $61, steel for the bracket $10, grade 8 hardware about $6, and the filter base with two large filters was $45. Total, including a replacement filter was $122. Seeings how it's on the pressure side of my lube system, I got (what I hope is) the best of everything.

Here's how it looks. More pictures in my gallery.
