Let's say a friend of mine has a mostly stock '96 XLT 351 with 150k on the motor and tranny, rear fender rust. He's been noticing a lot of slop in the rear end when stopping and starting. New u-joints and slip-joint freshly greased. He thinks it's time for a rebuild. A mechanic buddy tells him rear end needs to be rebuilt. My buddy has put in at least $2K since buying the thing a year and a half ago.. Now it looks like another 1K in one shot, plus a few more here and there's since it will already be on the lift. He dosen't mind making a long term project out of it, but the $$$ isn't there and the wife's not getting any happier. Here's the punch line. He's still paying for this thing. He's got $2500 left on the note. Does he have any options but to fix it? It's a slippery slope. He can't sell it like it is. Can't trade it in. Can't keep making payments on a rolling chassis. Anyone have any ideas? Something that will at least make him feel better about this? He's a hell of a good guy. Thanks mucho!
he should at leat try to tighten the rear pinion nut. these have a tendancy to loosen over time and give that same issue he is experienceing. it shouldnt take to much to tighten either. I would then remove the rear diff cover and take a look at the ring&pinion gears and limited slip gears if it has em. if everything looks ok then reassemble the cover and add fresh oil and limited slip additive if needed. he may just need some bearings replaced at most and can be done in his drive way with basic tools. try these free or cheap things first before going the replacement or swap route.
Agreed, Kem. First, pull off the diff cover and inspect the gears and see if they are rounded out or if anything else is awry. Secondly, the nut. My 88 F150 8.8 had a loose pinion nut and it would make a loud ka-bang! on take off. If im not mistaken it takes a 1 1/16 wrench.
Just dump the wife.....and then there will be plenty of clear sailing for any Bronco mod you want.....just remember that there are a finite amount of Broncos out there, but a new wife is easy to come by!
