I am considering trading my truck for a '05 6.0 6spd.
How is the bottom end on these things? How does it pull on big loads? I had a salesman tell me the other day that their 6spd owners where not happy when dragging a big load. I want a 6spd but that kinda made me worry. I will run some SCT files and exhuast but how does it perform stock and if your tuned how do you like it? Sorry to ask so many questions about this but just wondering.
Well, I'm not a "fella" , but I will tell you I went from a '01 F250 V10 4x4 CC 5-spd, to a '05 F350 6.0L 4x4 6-spd, specifically for the extra torque, and have not been disappointed in the least. I'm all stock, except for the BFG 35x12.50x18 mudder tires. The trailer (WW 31-ft) is ~10,000 loaded. Here are the things I've noticed that are better:
It definately moves the trailer from a standstill MUCH better than the V10.
It climbs hills while holding freeway speeds
There's no gap between gears (the V10 had a big gap between 3rd and 4th, especially on hills)
If you want low end torque get the diesel........ you'll never regret it. Ran I-88 and I-86 thru N.Y. and had all the power I wanted thru the hills and mountains.Ran long hills at 65 (speed limit) with my 9000# trailer.
I have a '04 6.0 TS right now. I love the TS but under a load I would rather shift when I want rather than when the puter says so. TrekChick nice ride.
All I can say, is go drive one. I have an 04' F250, PSD6.0, 4x4 SCLWB. I love the ZF6! The most I have towed is about 10,000 lbs. I've towed the same with a Ford 460 mildly built, a 7.3 auto and a Dodge Cummins 5spd. The Cummins had a bit more power down low. The 7.3 was nice. The 460 about the same. But the granny gear of the ZF is like granny of the old venerable NP465 or T18 of yester year. Even without using granny gear, it tows very nicely. Currently I tow my 25' camp trailer at most of 6,500 lbs. I love the gear selectabilitiy and seldom use granny gear to move it. (I don't always camp in traditional camp grounds, often in logging road deadends that have some steep approaches or loose terain). I've towed up and down 7% grades at highway speeds. Do a search for my posts about the ZF6spd. There are plenty of other threads about the manual transmission. Search for them too. As for using a tuner with the ZF6, I've heard that the clutch can slip. But that's only if you're actually getting some traction. There is an upgrade for the F450 clutch for our trucks if you experience that. And, the ZF6 is installed in trucks up to 26,000 gvwr. That's got to say something for the gear jammer in our consumer trucks.

Hi Todder: I have an 04, 2wd, 6.0L, 6sp, CC Lariat. I had it reflashed in March 05 and have no problem with lack of low end power. It will pull from 1000 rpm up to 5th and from 1200 rpm in 6th. It makes no difference if its loaded or not. Usually I'm towing a 24 ft, car hauler with a combined wieght of just over 14,000 lbs. I admit the truck will never win a drag race doing this, but the power rolls on smoothly. I don't make a habit of draging the revs down this low, but its nice to know its possible. I know you didn't ask but I also get 22.5 mpg. unloaded at 1800- 2000 rpm and 13-13.5 loaded.
How do these shift compared to a toyota truck transmission?
I have been to a few dealers to find a manual to test drive but no one has any. The only manuals I have driven are tacomas, 1985 toyota 4x4, and an 89 2wd f250 with the 4spd(granny 1st). I would like to try one out before ordering to see how they compare.
I currently have an 04 with the auto and am only cosidering going to the manual because I would like to add propane and the auto seems like it is already being pushed to its limits with a programmer.

i worked for a company with a 6sp 6.0 and as far as im concerned it shifts like a truck should, i haded drivin my pals toy. firm crisp shifts like a truck should have. just me .02
Hi Super Steve: I can't tell you how they shift compared to a Toyota. For the first 6,000 miles the shifts were stiff, after that they were a lot smoother. At 20,000 miles its shifting even better. By using first gear as well it loosend up and the truck shifts smoothly in and out of any gear. I doubt that my truck will ever win a drag race, but for its intended purpose its great.
Well it's a different shift pattern then the 5spd.ZF so that took me a while to figure out and stop trying to back over people at red lights. It shifts like a truck you will not be banging gears like a car that's for sure but IMO makes the PSD a super truck (I favor sticks over autos)
