Hey guys. I bought my 1969 F100 a couple of months ago and I had som back fire problems (they seemed very slight and only occured when you let up on the gas) and found what seemed to be a leak going into the carb. I decided to rebuild the carb and see if that would fix the backfire problem. I got the carb rebuild and when I installed it, it only runs when choked. When you release the choke (about half way) the engine stalls out.
Just wondering if you guys had any suggestions on what I might have done wrong.
It sounds as if the engine is running lean. Did you possibly forget to cap a vacuum line? New and correct carb gasket? Just because you used the one in the kit doesn't mean it's right.
Ok I check it out. there was a cap off. I also put gaskets I got from NAPA to make sure they were the correct ones. Now it will idle. I can press the gas pedel slowing and the engine picks up, but if I press it quick, the engine cuts out and dies. ??!!?
Your timing could cause this so be sure that's right first.
With the engine off, look down the carb (with the choke plate blocked open) and actuate the throttle by hand. You should see two steady streams of gas coming from the squirters as soon as you open the throttle. If not, you may need to adjust your accelerator pump rod.
There are three or four holes on the throttle shaft rod and I think you need to be in the second down from the top.
