I need someone to tell me what is causing the rattling when I take off in first or second gear. It is worst when I take off in second. Please help. This is a f150 98 4liter 2w. Has about 90,000 miles
There are far too many possibilities to start naming names.
Check the ignition system for starters.
Then if you are still stumped have a mechanic look at it.
Do you have an automatic or manual. If manual I would suspect a bad throwout bearing. Does it go away or get worse when you use the clutch? How does it sound when you get to the I think it's called pivot point? Pivot point is where you can feel the clutch putting pressure back thru the foot pedal.
If auto, it might be something in the tranny, or like the guy said, lots of other possibilities. Try crawling around under the truck and wiggling things to see if there are any items loose that need tightening. A lot of time it is just an exhaust hanger, loose running board mounts, heat shields etc. With two trannies I owned, it made a metalic rattle or grind sound because of damage to the sun shell, expensive rebuild ahead.
