I just put a new speedo in a 77 high boy with a dana 24 transfer case. The guage cluster i have in this truck is out of a 79, When i got to take off the speedo needle jumps around until about 35-40mph and then after that it is smooth. Do i need a new speedo or it is something else?

That's usually a speedo cable problem.

ford429cu --- yup, cable problem; binding in the sleeve. Try lubing it with special speedo lube available at your favorite auto store...

Although you may get some weird looks for asking for speedo lube.
