My 73 XLT is Hard to start after she is driven for awhile shut off and then restarted within a few minutes. It acts like a dead battery but the batt is fully charged. Any ideas? Thank you in advance James
In my 84 It did that and I replaced the starter. the motor got hot. my starter would not turn the motor over It was just like the batery was dead
this could be your problem or It might not be
Yea you hit the nail on the head. Thats exactly what it does. I thought it might be the starter or the timing as I just had the shop put a new intake gasket on it,
I agree with the starter diagnosis. Mine did the same thing and a new starter fixed it. I believe the heat from my header pipe destroyed the old starter and it was *very* difficult to remove because of the headers.

I have the same problem with my 76/390. I have a heat wrap on my starter and I have had problems with my timing. If I were to mess with my timing in this situation, what should I try. Right now it is set at about 6 degrees. When I advance it I start pining up hills and when under a load. Any suggestions?
Turn it back just a hair, to 5* BTDC. This might fix your problem without losing too much power. Another thing to try is set it up with a DSII spark box with a blue grommet. It has a feature that retards the timing while cranking. As a side note, most Ford engines do this, even my 300-6. I set up the timing on a 370 in an F-600 so it could actually move the truck down the road, and it would not start hot. No detonation, plenty of power, but the starter could not crank it over hot. I fixed this with what I just told you.
When I ask around about timing, everyone seems to tell me that the 390's like to be timed at about 10* BTDC. Like I said mine pings fairly bad there, so I backed it off to about 6. My motor has an Rv cam, performer 390 intake, 600 cfm carb, headers, duals. Does this seem right.
had this problem with my 74 and when the starter gets hots it takes more amps to operate.i installed a bigger cable from the solinoid to the starter and have never had a problem again!
