Underhood illumination?

I got my 1985 F150 about two months ago, and I took it out for a night drive for the first time. The headlights did not light up the road too well, but not bad either. I got out of the truck and noticed that there was a lot of light inside the engine compartment. It was shining up between the hood and quarter panels, about the same amount of light on both driver and passenger sides. I can't believe that this is normal and would like to get that light on the road and out of the engine compartment! Is there some sort of reflective shield that could have been removed by a previous owner? Any ideas?

Is it possible that the underhood light that mounts to the underside of your hood and illuminates your engine compartment has a faulty mercury switch, keeping the light on at all times...?

I've noticed that before, I think it has to do with brand of headlight. I'm not sure on whats the best though.

I didn't know I had an underhood light. It is either burnt out or missing entirely. I will check on that. Either way, thanks for taking the time to reply. The illumination is definitely from the back side of each headlight. If I don't burn these out by late fall, I will probably just buy a new pair of headlights for the winter season and see if that solves the "problem."
