keeps shutting off when I let off the gas

1979 f-150 sputters and spits and idles rough and dies as I cruise to a stop. I've replaced the fuel filter and that helped a little, but didn't resolve the problem entirely.
Problem is more severe in cold weather.

I'm sure I am not the only one to have this problem...Any suggestions?

Ummm, how long has it happened?

Have ya run through a full tank of gas(maybe you got a bad fill up)?

Have you checked the plugs, are they fouled?

Is your choke functioning normally?

Is the heat riser from the exhaust manifold intact, if not you'll always notice a difference in the cold idle during cold weather.

Have you cleaned out the carb ?
it could be clogged with somthing that snuck through the filter.

Is the mixture set right?

Did it start after anything in particular happened?(suspension lift(could've crimped the fuel line), off roading(could've stirred some crud up from the bottom of the fuel tank which clogged the line),

Were you doing burnouts ?(high revs might've killed the fuel pump),

Did you just fill up with gas ?(see above, bad gas).

There are lots of different possible causes, you just have to eliminate them one by one.
Ground the coil out and disconnect the fuel line before the filter, get a clear soda bottle with the label peeled off and shove the line in there and get somebody to crank the motor,

Are you getting a good flow of fuel?

Oh ya, one more thing, do you hear a whistle sound?

even if ya dont follow every vacuum line you can find and make sure none of em are cracking and there are no missing covers on the junction blocks, vacuum leaks can stall you at idle real easily.

Hope this all helped. If not try giving us some more details, thanks.
