What exactly does the breather filter do and how often should it be replaced? I'm asking because I recently got a 1979 Ranger Lariat (351m)and noticed the breather filter on the inside of the air filter housing was kind of dirty with black oil markings on it. I guess replacing it is pretty straight forward but let me know if there is anything I should be aware of. Thanks.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Nov-02 AT 10:41 PM (EST)]In simple terms it allows your crankcase to breathe. Works in conjunction with your PCV valve (as is my understanding).
I change mine with every oil change.
An ounce of prevention is worth a ton repair time!
Only one thing to be aware of - don't slice a finger removing the clip on the filter. (I am embarrassed to say it, but I did that the first time I changed mine!)
Keep it Rubber Side Down!
Thanks for the information. I'll be replacing it tomorrow along with some other things I want to do to tune up the truck. By the way you know the thin rubber hose that connects to the top of the arm on the air filter housing (where the air enters) Does this hose just pull off? I wanted to paint the air filter housing and arm with Ford blue paint but was having some trouble getting this hose off and didn't want to tear it. Thanks again.
If I am thinking of the right hose, it should just pop off. Though being as old as it is, it may need some encouragement. Just be careful and be sure the hose is at a warm temp (they are easier to get off when warm as opposed to cold).

Vacuum hose isn't that expensive. Head on down to the parts store and get a replacement. While you're at it, replace all of the old vacuum hose (feels good).

Yes, the hose should pull right off but they stick sometimes and as you pull harder they stretch which makes the inside diameter smaller which makes em hold on tighter, I agree, just replace em all.
