'94 351W Build

So, i just pulled a 351W out of a van, what do you all recomend be done to it for better power? Keep in mind, it has to be really reliable, it also has to run with the stock computer, also as far as what its powering, well that would be a loaded 15 pass. E-350 through mountains and the like. Any ideas on this one? I'm calling around tomorrow for pricing and would like some ideas.

ok, compcam 35-255-5, edelbrock truck efi intake, BBK 56mm throttlebody. I would have the heads worked over a little with 3angle valve job and a little port work. a good set of ceramic coated headers and single 3" exhaust with a bassini Y pipe. this would give you plenty to haul that heavy thing over the mountains , will work with the stock computer just fine

Kemicalburns, I see you post alot about the compcam 35-255-5. I suppose that is the cam that you are running. What do you think of the Edelbrock cam that is for the speed density system? Would it not work better if you got the intake, heads, and cam from Edelbrock? Don't they tune all the performer stuff to work together? I have a 95 F250 with a 5.8 in need of rebuilding. I don't want to have to change to MAF. I notice you post alot about this kinda of stuff. Thanks for the info and maybe it will help 351M also.
PS Anybody using this set up please reply pros and cons.

Well, personally, I assume that edelbrock will tune everything so that it works best together, but it will work just as good with other brands of parts as well. As far as this engine goes, its my neighbor's and he has now decided to give it to the school that was using it. So now he says just stock will do. I'm still going to mod the heads a bit, as well as do some port matchingt and other little things, cam included but I don't have the ok for al the mods now unless the intake is messed. Thanks for the help, lets see what everyone knows about these mods and how they will work, I might have other engines as well.

that compcam is speed density friendly and pretty much the best to run being flat tappet. I know a dozen guys running that cam and like it a bunch. I personally dont have any seat of the pants experience due to my motor being a roller cam so i would need to go a different route. I have another friend running that edelbrock cam, and the intake to boot and he likes it but is going to mass air because of some driveability issue that he cant pin down. his motor is a 357 so that may have something to do with it but not sure. you just need to look at the power range. the compcam produces power from idle up to 5500 rpms which is plenty. you could get a cam that starts around 1200 - 5500 but you may need a different torque converter to get you into the power quicker. just know that your lobe seperation on the came must not be less then 114* otherwise it will run like crap. some have gotten away with it but i do not advise it.

keep the ??'s coming

The comp cam is for flat tappet? The book never mentioned that one. That just went right out the window then. Unless i go and get an older 351W rebuilt with the heads and and other junk from this one. I am told that it will all work with no changes, then again I don't know much about the shop that told me that. They just said an '84 was dirct bolt in for a '94.

so your using the 94 block. is it an f4te stamped block, this will designate if its has a roller cam or is at least compatible to use a roller cam. otherwise its for sure a flat tappet design. there are other cams from compcams that are speed density friendly and are roller cams. call them to get the best option it just needs a lob seperation no less then 114* and a power range starting no higher then 1200rpms

Its definitly a roller setup, I had to pull the intake to get the hoist down low enough to pull the engine out, and its roller alright.

You may already know this but a roller cam compatible block does not have to use a roller camshaft.Either a roller cam or a flat tappet cam will work just fine.

i would call about these cams, find out which overs the best power range for your application. these will all fit a 5.8 so dont worry about it saying 5.0
