I've decided to bore one of my 390's 0.060, install a 428 crankshaft, etc. to turn it into a 422. The block is at the machinist's awaiting its turn on the boring bar.
I've been able to locate, and decode, the date code casting number. It is 8G15, which breaks out as 15 July 1968. I've not been able to break down the number (partial VIN) stamped on the rear of the block, which is 9Z516681.
I've searched the net for a decoder that deals with these numbers, but haven't found one. Can someone help me with this decode?
I may be wrong here so if I am corrected, it's no big deal... Ford, unlike GM did not put any VIN references on the motors, so the closest you can get to a "#'s Matching" is to have the block date code in close proximity to the build data info from your car. Now with that said, a "Z" code automobile from 61-68 was a 390 4v configuration.
Ford did do partial vins on late 68 and later blocks. Mike is right on the Z code 390 and thats the only listing I could find also. I'm not sure if a truck had a Z code but this is the right place to ask I'd imagine. I'm not up on my vin code decoding either but thought the first number 9 in your case was the year of the car/truck. It's possible depending on where the car was made (which plant) it would be possible for a 68 date code block to be in a 69 vin code model. Plus as I remember the Ford strike was around that time I think. Maybe xfordman could offer some insight on that. This site www.428cobrajet.org has a CJ block with a partial vin in one of the pics. Click on conponent ID, then blocks and scroll down a bit. Bingo! G.
Thanks guys,
That's pretty much the same conclusions I came to. I think the "9" does indicate the year, and the "Z" the engine type/size. I wasn't sure tof the "Z" 'cause I couldn't find any info on it anywhere. What's interesting is that it has C1AE heads (which are from a 1961 Galaxie, I think). From what I can determine, the "A" indicates Galaxie. Correct me if I'm wrong. It has a C5AE 4V intake ('65 Galaxie??), one C3SE exhaust ('63 Thunderbird??), and one C6AE exhaust ('66 Galaxie??).
