I'm getting ready to replace the wiring harness on my '79 and thought it may be easier if I remove the dash from the cab for better access. What is everyone's thought on the dash removal. I can change the harness without removing it, just thought it would be quicker.

NO sawzall!!! Take off all the stuff that bolts to the dash. (gauges, radio, heater control) You can leave the glovebox on. There are I think 6 screws on the top of the dash, 2 bolts on the very end, 1 that bolts the e-brake to the dash, and 2 bolts where the steering column is. I am pretty sure that is it to unbolt the dash.

Sorry, didn't mean to scare you there. I believe you need to take the sawzall to the sides of the dash where it mounts in the cab, I may be wrong. Doesn't matter. I took the instrument cluster out, naturally, my truck doesn't have the glove compartment in it. Only a door. Must have been optional on the Ranger model I guess. That did come in handy not having it there. The wiring going to the right bank of the engine compartment goes through the firewall behind the glove compartment and was easily accessable. I'm going to take pictures and do a full write up so that when I finish I can post it under the Tech Articles.
what type of wiring harness did you get? the one from painless wiring? My wiring looks like someone took a pizza cutter to it and put band aids on. I've been holding off due to the frustration that has to come from doing the job. I know there is nothing as plug and play with wiring, so please keep the board posted with your progress.
I swapped the dash in my truck for one with air conditioning and you don't need a sawzall. It all unbolts. I took a 78 dash and entire a/c system and installed it into my 77. Waa laa, factory air.
I left the dash in. My new harness is from Painless Shawn. It'll be here on Wednesday. Taking about three days for delivery. My old harness was taped up with so much electrical tape that you could mumify a small child with it. The old one did come out pretty easily though. I'll keep you all posted, should be finished by Sunday. I'm planning on trying to get the project ran as a Tech Article when finished along with pictures.
