Alright, I have been grinding on my flatbed for a very long time, and I must say, it is getting tiring. Is there an alternative to rust removal? Something easier? Or do I have to keep grinding?
Yeah, I've done that too but I find it only gets the scalding rust off, it's not aggressive enough to do a thorough job. If you want it done right, it needs to be sandblasted, or something of that level. The problem with grinding is it leaves a smooth metal surface. The sandblasting doesn't, and leaves a nice surface to paint undercoating on.
I'd have to agree with sandblasting. I've tried the grinder way, but it was much harder and more time consuming. Sandblasting is messier, but well worth it.
If you have a good compressor you can use a needle gun, if you have access to one. It works well in areas you can get at but sand blasting gets into more nooks and crannies.
If you've got to do an entire undercarrage, I suggest finding someone in the local area who does sandblasting. Bring your vehicle to the shop and have a professional do it. They have the equipment to do a large project like that in short time, and you know it'll be done right.
I have a craftsman gun with a 20 gal or so size sand bin. I also have a decent size compressor, and know that I couldn't sand blast my truck very well. It takes a lot of air to sandblast and it takes a big compressor to keep up. I plan on doing it myself, but by joining together 2-3 compressors I have, and possibly a big Ingersoll Rand compressor from my buddy's marina shop. That should give me pleanty of air, but I'll still have a small gun so it'll take me awhile but I feel like doing it myself.
