This may be one of those "coke vs. pepsi" things, but for what it's worth, I use a fluke, snap-on, and cheap harbor freight DMM in various capacaties. I also have a Radio Shack analog meter that I use occasionally. It seems more often than not, I end up grabbing my test light for automotive work.
I will say, however, that there's nothing like the feel of a good quality tool in your hands. If you get a cheap meter, pay out some bucks for good leads.

I believe the newer Fluke 88 meters will read down to .001 ohms resistance ve .10 ohms on a Fluke 87. This is great when reading low resistance relay or coil windings. Price reflects quality as they aren't cheap. As for leads Fluke seems the highest quality and most durable.
