I always manage to fill no matter the size.. I now have a one stall area to work in,and that really sucks, no long term work, has to be in and out within a reasonable amount of time. I get largely free run in the summer, but winter has to be available to the tractor...
I like my family shop as it sits right now, 60x100 with a 20x30 wing for metal fab. It has a 14' high door at one end and 20' eves. On several occasions, I've had my truck torn apart and several of my friends' trucks torn apart on any one weekend after playing to hard. It is also a great place to throw parties without having to worry about people complainin, since the closest neighbor is a 1/4 mile away. I am about to build a 40x40 shop at my house, since I don't need a large shop for major repairs.
I have a 30x40 with 12' walls and a big 30 ft shelf on one end. The door is on the 30 ft end and its a 12w x 10 high. I love it its big enough for 3 vehicles and lots more and I have it full of junk too. Maybe some guy's just have more junk than I do.
my 30x60 x 12 height is so full i can't hardly get around at all!! i need to build a shed for mowers, garden tools, snowplows, etc. but my wife thinks i have all the room i need in this "HUGE" building. ha ha. i built mine 10' longer than i originally planned and it's still not enough. build as big as the budget allows, you can always finish the inside down the road as money allows...
Can only repeat wha has been said many times...it will never be big enough
Mine is 24' x 48' with 11 ft high first floor walls (no post, I used I Joists), 8 ft high 2nd floor, and attic trusses so I can walk standing straight up in the attic (3rd floor kinda, 7'2 high in the middle)....
Still have little paths everywhere to get aroudn everything....
Mine's 32X32 and I have a 16x16 shed and I only get 1 ar into the garage. Both Kubota's sleep in the garage along with a fair amount a wood working equipment. If time allows I'm puting up another garage this fall, 28x36 with a 4 post lift.
So what do you guys call a big enough garage?
My dad always said you'll never build one big enough but i think that's because mom keeps filling it.
Anyway i think I'm gonna build a 30' 40' with a 10' ceiling whenever I buy this house hopefully this week or early next week.
Construction on garage would not start till probably next spring or summer. though.
My current garage space is: 4 car attached, 12x16 storage shed & a 40x40 shop with 15' ceiling. Still wish I had twice the room.
Still have 3 vehicles plus my boat sitting outside!
My first garage was 42x48 & at the time (20yrs old) was adequate. Ever since they all have been tooooo small.
Just think ahead what all you would like to have in shop when you build and build the largest (even larger) than you can afford. My next shop (if I move) will be minimum 40x80 separate from house.
Only trouble it gets a bit more expensive to have the Air Conditioning and Heat like I have now.
Hey guys nice to chat, I had a house built 2 years ago now, on 1-acre land and had my garage built at same time, (Father and I.) City would let me go 1000 ft.sq. So I went 30x32 and 11.5 ft. tall. Installed Autolift 2000 2-post hoist and it has already paid for itself, for my 6 vehicles. Exhaust, brakes, trannys, Tune-ups and is nice. Never had one before, big garage or hoist. stuck with gravel driveway on gravel road and gets really dusty all the time but oh well. I agree never big enoug but as said on above posts try to keep toys in back shed, and only stuff I need in garage to work on vehicles. Amazing how the walls get filled w/ tool chests, benches etc. Needed to keep walls by hoist clear, so actually takes up room for tools. If have a hoist/lift will need a basement area/ shed clear for putting extra equipment and tools. A downside I can live with I guess. And fan/lights above lift are delete. Of course like anyone I would like to make overhangs on one side for other car storage, but will be awhile.
I have framed quite a few houses over the years but in the last two years I have framed a couple of houses for a builder that have a garage set up I really like. From the outside it looks like a standard 3 car garage, one 10 x 8 door and one 16 x 8 door. The width is 42' and the depth is 48' on the small door side and 52' deep on the large door side. It has a 10' ceiling so room for lots of cabinets. Very nicely done by a clever architect.
I built a 24x48 foot garage two years ago. It was intended to be two cars wide by two cars deep. Half the time, I can't get my truck in the darn thing. The normal set up is one stall for the boat, one for the wife's car, one for my truck, and one for current projects. The projects almost always spill over into the truck stall leaving me parking outside.
I have a pull down set of stairs to a full height attic. I cut a 4x4 foot hole in the deck, and have a hoist to lift stuff up into the attic. It is great for storing off season equipment (snow blowers/lawn mowers etc). That really frees up some floor space.
