86 2.9 fuel filter

Can someone tell me if I remove the fuel filter located on the frame rail, will I have to do something to keep the fuel from flowing? I started to remove the bowl and a large amount of fuel came out, more than I would expect to be in the lines.
Thanks

did you check to see if you don't have another fuel filter further up ahead past your hp fuel pump but before your fpr. did you find a fuel filter in the canister type filter in there or was it empty.

I didn't think there was a second filter beyond this one and no, I did not pull the canister because too much fuel was comming out. I guess it was siphoningout of the tank???

i have found the best way to change the rear filter is to nearly have the fuel tank empty.

should be one right in front of the hp pump right next to the starter.

I briefly owned an 88 with only the canister type filter, and of course no cartridge. Once I got the grit out of the bottom I destroyed a couple of O rings putting it back together. Finally I got an old inner tube from the tire store and cut out a large one like the rubber gasket on a mason jar. Worked great. Luckily my driveway is very steep so I was able to use the incline to my advantage to control the fuel loss.

U shouldnt lose all the fuel in the tank b/c of gravity but all the fuel in the top of your engine will drain out. MIght be a bit but nothing to worry about. just let it drain and replace when filter when its done draining. hope this helped and gl.

I`ve changed the filter in my 86 2.9 with the canister and had the same happen to me. I`ve found no way of keeping the gas from draining out of the tank except to try and be as fast as possible. Yes I had alot of gas get on the ground and me. The hardest part was the rubber O ring. I put a little vaseline on the O ring and that helped alot. I have not found anyother fuel filter on my Bronco so I hope this helps you some.

I did find a second filter and I need to check that. I have jumped the inertia switch and hp pump relay and the hp pump runs but I don't know what the pressure is. I can't get it to start but if I blow fuel into the intake it wants to start. I may have a bad eec since the hp relay does not function correctly after I replaced it. I could have 2 problems. any thoughts. can I check the eec by pulling the codes?

The fuel bowl is the onle place I could find a fuel filter. It was a cartridge type and I could not find another filter anywhere else. How far up the line did you find this other filter? The only other problem I had with mine was that I checked my fuel pressure and I had 38 psi but it still would be hard to start and if it did it had no power. After taking apart the fuel rail and injectors I found the fuel rail had a lot of trash and rust in it plus the injectors were clogged up. What I had to do next was sandblast the fuel rail and and after inspecting the fuel injectors I found that I needed to replace them and after all of the hassle the fuel rail and injectors my bronco runs and cranks better than ever with no hesitation. Just remember that even though you might have the right fuel pressure that your fuel rail where the injectors meet might be glogged up and if this is the case you might have to replace your injectors also. You can`t just rely on your pressure cause I`ve seen it happen.

dpending on the year 86,87,88 some had one canister type other had a inline filter
and other had both. canister type is located by the fuel tank in the rear section of the truck. here's how is goes= fuel tank=canister type filter (sometimes you remove it to find a sump=high pressure fuel pump=then inline filter located right next to the starter=then you have your fpr=then injector rail=finally injectors.
