Question 1997 Starter Issues

I have a 1997 5.4L F150 with a starter issue. Truck would not start, removed starter and found it was in need of replacement. Installed new starter and once all wired were connected went to apply the leads on the battery I get a load spinning noise?? I am not a seasoned mechanic but it seems to me either I have it miswired or the solenoide is not engaging? As a further test I rewired the 3 connections to the solenoide and had not spinning noise but when you turn the key I get nothing. Someone give me a solution please this is wearing on me

Don't pass up the possibility that the starter itself is DOA out of box. I have had that happen many times and I know I am not the only one. Also check to make sure the solenoid is not stuck or in need of replacement itself. If you replaced the starter and didn't touch the solenoid, (wiring part that is), then it should work as it is and not need rewiring. Take the starter out and take it back to the parts store. They should be able to test it for you. Also take the solenoid out and see IF they can test that as well. Not all parts store can test those.

Ok, but I thought the starter and solenoid were all one unit? At least that is the way it looks to me. The starter is about the size of a coffee can and solenoid is smaller in size and is one unit.

It sounds like two wires touched and caused the spinning, and then burned out the starter. On my truck the wires can only go on one way. (2000). I do agree to take it back and have it checked on the machine, if bad claim the warreny.

I must admit, I have not changed the starter on anything newer than a 96. The starter, and solenoid were seperate where the solenoid was mounted on the passenger fender. If they are 1 unit, then just take it back to have it tested. If replaced, it will save a step.
