OK...I am in the process of adding all the toys I can to my truck....hidden CB, video/audio system...etc. Now I am in the process of looking for a remote starter/keyless entry/alarm unit. I will have no problems with the installation since I used to do these for a living but that was about 16 years ago so I am sure products have changed. What should I look for? Any specific brand, type...etc? What about the chip in the key? I don't like the idea of leaving a key in the truck inside of a box just so it can be read when remote starting. Is there another option? I like having a spare since I have locked my keys in already. (Boat ramp...boat on trailer, cant move truck...bad day).
Is it possible to just get another "key" and cut the actual key part off then using only the head of it for the remote start?
I have a Viper remote starter unit in my 03 Screw. No alarm, but I'm sure the Viper alarm will hook up. But for my remote start, they have a $50 module that goes into the ignition column area. I think it "acts" like a key, but I need no key.
I don't remember which exact model I just bought. But it was the low end one that still has page back.
But with remote starters, I'd look for the system where you add that module. Just my opinion though.
Thanks...i will look into Vipers. So the module doesn't require the key to be inside of it? Hmmmmm wonder if it gets programmed with your key then keeps that electronic signature for the ignition. That I could deal with!
In October 1998, I had a remote start system called AstroStart, made by a Canadian company called Astroflex, installed in my 1999 Expedition. After nearly seven years and 85,000 miles placed on the truck, I've had zero problems with it. Even the original remotes still work.
