I have a 390 in my 1969 F-250, the truck was running just fine till the other night when it stalled on me. It will start up just fine but when I go to put my foot on the gas it almost seems to want to stall but then it picks back up and runs fine. Everytime the gas pedal is pushed it tries to stall on me. It has new gas in the tank, new fuel filter and all the fuel lines look good. Any ideas let me know, also when I put on the new fuel filter it had "in" on one end. I put on hose coming from the fuel pump on this end.
Thanks,
Rick
Sounds like a main jet is plugged up. I had that happen a couple times when I was running a carburetor on mine. A piece of grit would inevitably get past the fuel filter, and plug one of the main jets. Step on the gas, sputter and stall. Let off, idles just fine. Idle it home, clean out the float bowl and the main jet, runs like a top.
Another possibility is the accelerator pump. In this case, it would want to stall, but then it would take off and you could drive, until you had to hit the gas again.
Now that I think about it, it sounds more like an accelerator pump.
Does it take off and go eventually, or does it consistantly stall when the gas pedal is pushed? If it eventually takes off and goes, it's probably the accelerator pump. If it's just one big stall and all it will do is idle, then it might be the main jet.
I'd advise you to rebuild the carburetor in either case.
Sounds like the accel pump is either not working or the outlet nozzles or passage is plugged. If the main jets were plugged anything above about 1/8 throttle would cause the engine to die and not run at all. Had you just fueled the truck up? Bad gas can cause all kinds of problems.
I just drained the old gas, put in new gas, changed the fuel filter and gave the old girl a oil change. I'll rebuilt the carb or have it rebuilt and let you guys know what happens.
Thanks,
Rick
