No Mike I wasnt trying to guide you anywhere..you just inquired about the 360 and the Mirror 105...and I just added to what Kurt had said is all...LOL..
I agree with Big Cubes!! If I had enough money to build a Bigger motor for my truck and still be able to Build My 521" Motor for the Mustang I would... But I'am just going with most of the parts I have for the 395" stroker....well with the acception of a few minor change's....LOL...
Mike, the 105 360/390 is great way to build a nice FE motor. No doubt about it.
But, if you're gonna drop that kind of money in to crank,rods,pistons,valve-train.why bother saving money on the block. The custom pistons are probably going to cost the same regardless if they are a 4.08 (.030 over 390) or a 4.25 (.020 over 427). And, with the BBC rods and 4.25" stroker crank, you're gonna need custom pistons anyway.
I'm just looking at the numbers:
scat crank 4.25"- $700
BBC rods- 6.7" about $500
custom pistons- $600
machine, balance, bearings- I dunno, maybe a grand- $1000 (maybe less)
crane hyd. roller $350
roller lifters $450
Ersons- $650
Stage II edels- I'm guessing $3000 by the time you get the valves and springs setup right.
custom pushrods- $150 ( I recccomend Smith Bros)
at this point, the difference between a $500 block and a $2000 block isn't that significant. but, there is some power to had there. And, later you hopefully won't look bad and say "I wish I'd have stroked that 427 block instead"
I just know, that if I was going to spend this kind of money again, I'd be looking at a 427 block or maybe even one of the new 427 based Shelby or genesis Aluminum blocks.
This is true. Displacement will make torque, no doubt about it. Plus, with a bigger bore, you can stuff bigger valves in it.
But the difference is not between a $500 engine block and a $2000 engine block. The difference is between a $30 engine block and a $2000 engine block, if you know where to look. I got a complete 360 engine from the junkyard for $35. It was laying on the side of the path! Pick it up, go. The only thing that was wrong with it, other than being full of sludge, was a spun rod bearing. The block seems to be in good condition.
Remember how I said I have two mirror 105 blocks in the garage? I'd give one to Mike FREE if he picked it up, just to get it out of the garage. Unfortunately, Canada is a long way away...
I guess it comes down to how much he wants to spend...
Allright so the 427 has definately become a top contender. I'll probably go with the top oiler style.
Will this fit between my regular 360 engine mounts? just wondering, not to mention will accessories bolt up no problem like power steering for example?
Anyways I'm gonna look for parts and get back to you guys shortly.
Thanx

Ps: As for Canada being far away, well you're right about that, it sure makes ordering parts a B@tch. All the extra shipping and custom charges I would say makes it something for the hardcore only. It makes a part cost much more than what I'm ordering it for.... Damn!!! LOL
You might want to talk to Dennis at DSC. The prices he quotes on the website are not always availible. Last time I inquired about a 427 he said he only had one coming up for sale and ahe wanted 2000 for it. It might even been 2500, it's been awhile.
Just don't do a budget based on the website.
Don't get me wrong Dennis is a great guy to deal with. This stuff is just getting hard to find and prices go up and down.
well guys the 427 is definately an option that is if I can find one at a reasonable price, If not I think a 428 is called for. I guess I have some shopping to do but I'm not going to buy the first thing I find. I'll call DSC and get a quote.
You guys rock, and are definately great salesman. If I decide to go with the 428 how is that for strength?... I'm pretty sure it's fine, just need a little reassuring I guess. When did they pull production on the 428?
Thanx Gtex for the extra help. Unfortunately One guy is selling to US residents only, The next will ship worldwide... but he's selling a new original side oiler, which would be nice but the bidding is already up to $3300 with a couple days left of bidding, not to mention I have to get it over here. And the last guy will arrange for local pick up only.
Man I'm starting to wonder if being Canadian is a good thing LOL, I think I'm gonna move down south where there are countless rust free old ford parts and numerous fe blocks a bit of everywhere. LOL
Yeah I guess I should try to get a hold of the guys selling, I just wrote Dsc to find out if he has any 428s
How far can I bore out a 428?
Anyways I'm gonna go and cut out the exhaust on the 74, I'm prepping engine removal.
Thanx
