Side Mirrors

Does anyone have any expirence with FORD SIDE MIRRORS the ones that fit in the slots on the door. My bracket broke and I found a replacement on line for $39.00 Then I found a set for $115 they said they won't break like the others. (the brackets) Is there a good mirror and a KMart mirror. Or is someone trying to sell me snakeoil.??

Majority of the Ford reproduction supply outlets have the round outside mirrors costing between $45 to $65 each. Does not include the mirror arm to door bracket. Purchased a spare thru the auction network and was in good shape, but have to watch, not sure what you get. Sometimes, by time add handling and shipping, may be cheaper to get good quality reproduction. Suggest going online and browse few of the Ford parts supplier catalogs. You can get idea of cost and availability. Many will send catalog free or for nominal fee, handy to have on hand.

Tried to edit the previous thread but for one reason or other could not get back into FTE forum. Sounds like the bracket was the issue more than the mirror. The estimate of between $45-$65 i believe includes the bracket. Should be able to replace the bracket, original somewhatr hard to find. May check with Dennis Carpenter for reproduction bracket. There is an aftermarket 'universal' bracket but don't believe they should run more that $15-$25, perhaps more knowledgeable member can advise. Again, suggest going to suppliers online catalog and check cost and availability.

Thanks Dave I'll try Dennis Carpenter all I need is the Bracket. I was just wondering if this was a common problem the three I've seen are all broken on the Bracket.

Just a random thought. How much stress do these mirrors take? In normal use, nothing should put pressure on them. If something hits them hard enough to break, it may also be hitting them hard enough to bend the door if they don't break. I personaly would rather replace a mirror than do body work

new, these brackets were pot metal chromed. They would tend to break from the constant slamming of the doors. These are the same from 1956-66. J&B Microfinish (http://www.jbmicrofinish.com/) sells a solid aluminum bracket that will not break. They also have some that are extended by 1". That extra 1" is helpful on the 53-56's especially on my 56 panel truck to eliminate some of the passenger side blindspot.
Be careful what you buy. There are some that are made in Taiwan that the chrome will pit in record time.

Are you guys talking about the brackets that bolt to the door with two bolts and stick out of the little rectangular slot?
Mine are solid steel on my 62 and my 63. My new ones from D.C. are pot metal.

I'm going to a yard that has a truck with the bracket on it I'll pull it for you. It is not chrome but it appears to be OE. PM you address to me and I'll send it otherwise I'll hang onto it for a spare. BTW I'll just got a pair of mirrors off ebay $115 and one of the brackets was not tapped for the mounting bolts.

Thanks Guys I think I'll try the aluminum brackets if there not to pricey. I know about the steel brackets I have access to them locally, but I would like to stay with the chrome. It's just got to be pretty. Thanks guys for the info
