6.0 PSD Stalling possibly found
Folks using the right oils with quality fuel additives here, at FTE, just seem to have fewer issues than those that don't.
In addition, IMO, don't listen to the people that recommend or advertise 25,000 mile oil changes. I don't care if they claim their product was derived from the nectar of the gods. Once you exceed the Ford recommended oil change intervals you just popped your entire engine warranty.
Some people are quick to point out how much their new 6.0 Power Stroke Diesel Truck cost and how Ford should do this or that...Then they try to squeeze every penny they can out of an oil change.
I change at 5000 mile intervals, and have used Rotella (dino) for all changes.
For two intervals ( 10,000 miles ) over the winter months, I used Rotella 10-30 which so happened to be CI-4 rated (not PLUS rated). Occasionally the motor would stumble and produce light/white smoke on light throttle settings. If I pushed the pedal down harder, it would clear up and take off like a rabbit. I had the dealer look at it while it was in for the tranny reacll and they could not repeat the problem, nor could they find anything wrong in routine testing.
When it was time for new oil, I went back to the Rotella 15-40 which also happens to be CI-4+ rated. I have never experienced a "stumble" while running with the 15-40 Rotella ( another 10,000 miles ). My conclusion, based strictly on my own experiance is that my 6.0 likes the 15-40 weight oil better. I sent a sample to Blackstone 5000 miles ago, and have a new sample in the jugs waiting to go, and still have not seen any results, so I can't tell you what is happening to the oil from that perspective. I also find it curious that the CI-4 and CI-4+ ratings of the two oil weights involved, were also part of this mystery.
There does seem to be some merit in the use of the CI-4+ rated oils, at least in my mind, (however small it may be).

According to Ford's latest TSB, 15W-40 weight oil should be used for the bulk of where and how we use our trucks. They allow 10W-30 (make sure it is diesel rated) for extreme cold weather operation, but not for towing!!

My own experience with the two oil weights would help to validate Fords reccommendation to use 15-40 weight oil.
