Hey all,
I'm putting in my first clutch in my 65 F100 (Torino Tranny) and just want to make sure I'm not going to have to pull everything out again just to replace some minor piece.
I've got the clutch and T/O bearing ordered along with new flywheel and pressure plate bolts.
I've got the flywheel resurfaced (you guys shoulda seen it!)
I'm trying to locate a pilot bushing (any recommended place?)
I'll be cleaning the leftover clutch pieces and all the gunk out of the bellhousing and tray tonight.
Am I forgetting anything? Any seals to replace? I'm not getting a new P/P due to budget...is this is a mistake? I'm short on time and don't want to pull it all out again, although I really don't mind....it's my landlord that does!

On the side of the bellhousing the dust boot i wanted to replace on my clutch but the Ford dealership could not even order it so i guess mine will do.
my local advace auto parts had the pilot bushing for $6.40. I got the entire NEW clutch assembly for about $150. It came with the new disc, pressure plate, and throw out bearing and line up tool.
It sounds like you have everything you need. I just have finished my first clutch install. I had the same question about last week

OH YEAH! Stupid me, I was following that post, I had a ton of the same questions you did. The help from the other guys on this site is unbeatable. I've had a lot of ?'s answered just by searching. Eventually I want to rip my engine out of the truck too and rebuild it just so I know what it is. At this point it's a mystery as to the inner workings because I don't know what the prev. owner did, but I know where to go with my ?'s. Thanks again.
Also, thanks to Jor for help with getting the pilot bushing out! I thought that trick was great, it took a while for me to figure out the correct combo of tools to combine to get it out while under the truck but eventually I did it! For anyone else reading though, I think a grease gun utilized here would save a big mess, and be sure to check the sizing of bolt to hole before putting the grease in.......
You can re-use the plate...I have in a pinch. The best thing to do with a used plate is take some 120 grit sand paper and "rough" up the mating surface. You're not trying to remove any material, just rough it up so the disc has something to "grab" onto. Go in little circles so it looks like your flywheel. Don't use any power tools here, cause you don't want to cut into the surface and make it uneven. A shot of brake cleaner to remove any oil/residue after you're done and ready to install.
As for the clutch fork DUSTBOOT...they are available thru LMC for $17. Don't sweat it though...mine have been missing for years..........

Just for clarification, there aren't any "main seals" or "rear seals" invoved here are there? I'm wondering because there is an awful lot of oil/road grime built up everywhere under the hood! Once the clutch is in, I'll be taking it to a car was to pressure wash the old owner out of it! Do our FE's have a common place they leak from?

Just a FYI wear something old, park you car or truck away from the car wash stall, safety glasses (face shield is better). You can trust me on this one. I have done 2 in the past week. I have been covered from head to toe in grease and grime. All in my hair on my face my arms my legs. The presaure and the shape of the bell housing will throw it back at you if you are not carefull.
No seals that i know of. It is a seal in the front of your manual tranny that could leak, but that is not very common. ( i might be off the wall on that one but i think i have read that somewhere in that past week or so.)
Ya, if the tranny is pretty dry...don't pull retainer to install seal. You can...but usually not a major oil leak issue with it. It is only drain back oil from front bearing and it's not pressurized.
If rear seal of motor is leaking..........you "might" want to get into it with bellhousing out of the way. Much easier now then with all that stuff hanging down. If it's dry back there...bolt'r all together and run it.
They make them from wood, and I have one, plus they have universal kits with all sorts of pilot bushings. In a pinch, an old tranny input shaft can be used. You need it to get the clutch disc in the right spot while tightening the pressure plate. Otherwise, the odds of getting it right by "eye" are about 1,000,000,000 to 1 ...
I would never reuse the pressure plate if you have the money to replace it. Without knowing more about how your clutch failed, if it overheated at all, or started slipping, the darn thing is bad to begin with
Story Time:
Well, I traded the bike for a bike and the truck, the guy says you need a new clutch, I say no problem. I jump in the truck and there is no play in the clutch pedal at all! Crawl under the truck and adjust it (the guy didn't know you could do that) and it "feels" fine....until you drive. I couldn't even give it 1/4 throttle or the clutch would slip, obviously glazed. I'm finally pulling it apart and find disc shrapnel everywhere, down to the rivot's on the f/w and almost un-measereable pad on the p/p side. The f/w is resurfaced but cash is low as I'm buying a house and need the truck for the move......Is it really going to be that bad re-using the old p/p?
It's not the best plan...but it can be made to work as long as the surface is not hurt from the rivets and such gouging into it!
If the surface is not completely BURNT and is smooth...then rough it up with sand paper and give it a shot. If it gets you buy for a short time then you can save up for a pressure plate and get it in later.
Not the best plan...but if you can't swing the parts...make due.
Well.....I'm home now, located that pilot bushing too. The p/p is way too damaged to use again....looks like I'm in the market after all....the better half will understand I'm sure!
check out an advace auto parts (if you have them in your area) If i could find my paper work on it then i could tell you the part number and price. It is a new clutch assembly.
I got a good deal on a clutch kit for a mustang from NAPA. sometime you can talk them guys down on prices (as long as the are not dumb asses)
I had already ordered stuff from Summit, so I just added the centerforce II p/p. Expensive? yes...worth it? lets hope so. I've heard much praise for this one and hopefully I'll be able to experience the full potential of my FE! It's been sad only being able to hear it and not being able to mash the throttle! I ordered Steve Christ's "how to rebuild your ford big block" and hope to rebuild mine in another year or so..maybe sooner depending on budget. Although there is so much aftermarket stuff out there, I think it'll be a long project, I want to get at least 400hp out of it eventually....the Crane Cam 941 is a good place to start, along with a port and polish I think?
