I have been searchign the nation for a sending unit for a 1986 F-150 with a 4.9L SOMEONE HELP. It doesn't have to have the low pressure pump attached the stock one is working fine...for now, but i am going crazy guessing how much gas i'm using and have left. You'd think the never made these things! Anyone got some sugestions.

Reason: I can't spell.
I helped a friend put one in his Jeep. He paid $72 bucks for it! The old one was shot for sure in the control as well as the float had a crack.
Maybe just your float is leaking? If you can get the gas out of it and well-dried, maybe some sort of epoxy gas tank repair or soldering the crack might help? Use as little as possible.
You'd think there would be a million of these at some wrecking yard somewhere. Well, not all at the same yard, but you know. ;-)
The problem is the bulkhead where the sending unit inserts the tank is so rusted i'm afraid to pull it to inspect it. I have a new tank sitting here but now I need a sending unit so I can just replace it and be done. Any other suggestions?
Normally you need a special "bung" wrench to pull the sending unit, but a decent sized flat punch and a big hammer with some well placed blows will often see them come loose.
If your float is full of fuel, drill a small hole in it(on a corner) and drain it.
You can use silver solder and flux to re-seal it after, but watch the heat levels.
Another option for re-sealing is buying some SealAll glue. It can actually be used to repair gas tanks, and is easy to apply.
Your local auto-parts store should sell new fuel sending units, but I do believe they are integral to the in-tank pump, and may be purchased under the fuel pump category.
I removed the bung on that Jeep by using two channel lock pliers. One each on opposite side, held so their handles went over the top of the bung and their jaws grabbed a single side of the hexnut from the top. They faced opposite directions, one north, the other south, so to speak, clamped onto opposite sides of the bung. That way, the turning force was placed onto the head of the opposing wrench and I spun it off like a T-handle.
Hope that makes sense! If not a picture would =1k words. I'll shoot one next time the camera's out.
If it is just the float, old pill bottles work well for a float... My rear float was 1/4 full, and the front float 3/4 full... but my sender resistor was bad as well. I did a rework using JC Whitney universal senders. check out this thread... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=383061
Not likely, I tried that, for whatever the reason, 85-6 senders are hard to find, and when you do, they are expensive, typically around $120, while the 80 to 84 senders are easy to find and fairly cheap, about $40. Bronco Graveyard has the senders, but the prices are like I just said. Not enough sales, so not enough places have them and have them cheap.

I bought new sending units for my 1980 at the Ford place. They were pricey at about $100 each, but I got them and they worked. I replaced the tanks at the same time and they were about $120 each and worth it. I also bought a sending unit for my 89 which is similar to yours at O'Reilly for about $80. I think both LMC Truck and Blue Oval Truck Parts have the sending units.
I've learned long ago that similar andFord isn't generally going to be a match. You would need to see it and compare to what you have to be sure, but the prices i saw look to me you woulld be best served to go to some one like Bronco Graveyard, which I did mention has them, or Blue oval has them as well. O'reilly does not list any for an 86, but did for an 89. If it should work plug and play, I would think it should have a listing...
I guess I should have kept the other 86 sender I had, cause now I have the same problem, I thought they would be the older style since there was still a mechanical fuel pump on the 300 in 86.
