Now that we know he will not be driving for D.E.I. were will he go next year? Let's make our predictions now. I'll start. I guess he will be in the #2 car taking Rusty's spot.
Jamie McMurray is signed to drive the #6 car in '07, so I supposed its possible that they MIGHT have Waltrip drive it for a 1-year deal, but I doubt it.
Supposedly, Roush is trying to talk Mark Martin into coming back for 1 more year, but I dont see Mark doing that.
Waltrip has the best equipment money can buy and he hasnt won lately, so I dont see any of the top teams hiring him.
I would see Roush bringing Jon Wood up from the truck series before I could see him hiring Waltrip.
Octane
I don't know where he will end up but I don't believe it will be one of the premier rides such as the #2 or #6. If it weren't for DEI restrictor plate engines and cars Michael Waltrips career would still be less than spectacular. If all drivers were given grades, Michael would be a C ( just my opinion )

Gotta agree. . . Remember how many starts he went before finally winning a race? I definitely think he's lost his opportunity of being with a top tier team. And it looks like Martin will be back in the 6 next year.
I saw on the Nascar news that Mark Martin would be willing to drive the 6 car next year if Rousch needed him but one thing is for sure that he doesn't need Michael Waltrip.
Don't expect him to get a top notch ride. I wouldn't be surprised to see him out of Cup. He has too many other things going. Bush team owner. Full time Bush driver. Truck owner. Maybe drive trucks. Commentator. Commercials. etc, etc.
I'd like to see him back to his old ways. Really genuine funny guy. But then he won at Daytona and became a 'star'. (According to him, anyway )
yeah, they were just talking to Mark in the pre race show, and while he didn't actually say that it was set in stone that he was going to be driving #6 next year,he did say he would be there to drive as long as jack needed him to. Maybe Jack can buy Jamie's contract out for next year from Ganassi,so Jamie can start next year instead of 2007,and give Mark the much needed time he needs with his family and his other interests
I will jump in here, Yes saw Mark just now on the pre race. I think if Jack and the team wants him back in there before Jamie can get out of his contract, he will be there. Getting back to Waltrip, I have seen in several places that he and Tony Eury are being courted by Toyota to drive a Toyota team... Many faces are going to change in the next year or so
The only stars at Daytona and Talladega were those drivers that were winning them before restrictor plates came along and they actually had to back off the accelerator to get through the turns. I hate this stuff of every car running wide open all the way around the track and the race eventually sorts itself out to who has the fastest restrictor plate car. I love Nascar racing but it wouldn't break my heart if they shut down Daytona and Talladega where the car is the star, not the driver.
A driver is only as good as his team, and DEI has been struggling. Not just Michael, but Dale, jr. too. I believe the problem is internal. Maybe its just time for a change. Everyone within that team gets frustrated.
Mickey is not an outstanding driver. And he is so annoying with his sponsor's name. I know that they all try to promote their sponsors, but he's over the top.
I just can't see Toyota going after him. But you never know. And, I can't see them going after a driver anyway. They'll want to take over an established team first.
