Front disc scrubbing

Okay here goes, When normal braking, my 83 F100, has pretty normal braking, when I have to brake hard, my front passenger disc sound like metal on metal. The pads are in good shape and I've already replaced bad tierods and a bad lower ball joint. I also replaced the front wheel bearings and had the disc turned and it still does the scrubbing thing. The truck calls for 195/75r15 but has 255/70r15's on it. One other thing, The main reason I replaced the wheel bearings was on the side (passenger side) thats doing all the grinding noises, the spindle nut bottoms out on the threads before it tightens the disc all the way. Just a smidgen though. So I made an extra washer to put there so it does tighten the disc up. There are no shinny spots that I could tell anywhere around the disc or caliper or dust shield.

Okay, I just thought of one more thing to make this post even longer, the bolt that holds the thing you have to slide in to lock the caliper in place is not the original. It doesn't have the tapered edge below the bolt head. It just a regular bolt that tightens snug. What gives??

Is the scrubbing sound really, really bad; and is it just under extremely hard braking? Remember, you have metallic brake pads, so there is definately metal to metal (so to speak).

The reason I ask, my wife drives a Toyota minivan, and it does the same thing, only under extremely, and I mean extremely hard braking.

Yea, even though the pads are in really good shape, they could be the cheaper kind.

I guess I need to go ahead and change them.

Here's something to think about. I worked in a parts house for years, and it seems it is always better to use the BEST available brake parts available. If you use name brand, or premium pads, use their best rotors as well. Premium pads, and cheap rotors will work, but the pads can eventually chew up the rotors. The brakes are one of the most important tools you have on your vehicle, so a little investment goes a long way! In short, if you are going to replace things, go with the top of the line pads and rotors.

My 2 cents...
