Y-Block Freeze Plug Sizes ???

Are the freeze plugs for all y-blocks interchangable... I see alot of sales for freeze plugs listed to fit 252, 272, 312...but the 239 isnt listed ?
Are they not the same size?
And which are better...Steel or Brass ???

Ed

I believe the block plugs are the same, but won't swear to it. The 239s generally have freeze plugs in the ends of the cylinder heads, which might be why the kits don't list the 239 application (those plugs not included, in other words). Of course you might have later heads & don't need 'em. You can get them separately, of course.

As far as brass vs. steel goes, that's a debatable point. Brass plugs don't corrode, so they last longer. Longer is a relative term; new steel plugs will last for years, if you keep decent antifreeze in it. Brass plugs sometimes do not seal well in my experience (and others, including some highly respected engine builders). They tend to be slightly undersize for some reason, maybe the different material going through the same manufacturing process. With either type, coat them with Permatex #2, or a high quality silicone like UltraBlack, & tap them in square to the block. I don't have any particular preference, except if it's a marine application, or if I suspect the owner will not maintain it well, I will definitely use brass. Hope it helps-

I bought Y block parts from Parts Dinosaur before. Good parts and service was my experience. I have a set of steel freeze plugs for a y block I will send you. I used the brass ones. PM me with your mailing address.

Hi Roger...Thanks for the offer but I have already found a set locally. I went to a little (off the beaten path) parts shop and got a set he had on the shelf.
First attempt was a 1 49\64 size that had the dimple in the middle for setting plug .....just went thru the block....I think the side width of the plug was too thin. Then got 1 3\4 (Dorman 555-034) 1\2" wide on the side and without dimple ...fit great and all is now done.
but again...Thanks Ed
