Tailgate Locks??
OK, I give. I really need some way to prevent my tailgate from growing legs and running off. Do not live in the greatest neighborhood and the neighbors are not exactly co-operating in the parking space area as far as allowing me to back up to anything to keep the tailgate from even being opened. Everytime I find a place to park it like that someone sneeks in and takes it from me. (No, moving is NOT an option unfortunately) I have searched for a lock and alas, nada, nothing, not a derned thing on the market for the Ranger. I found one from Pop and Lock, but how the heck does it fit on there? Does anyone have a lock on their tailgate and if so what kind, where to get it and how much?? My truck is a 2000 Ranger, the tailgate handle is just like the door handles and I do not have power locks....HELP!!!!!

sorry man, as for as tailgate locks are concerned, Ford thinks they're "harder" to take off than that of an F150; thus, no one makes locks for ranger tailgates. I inquired about that when i bought my edge and that's what the head service manager told me

A fancier (more expensive) device is an electric lock...

It seems to work with manual door locks also.
IMO, Jimw411's hose clamp method is the cheapest way. The petty opportunistic thieves who steal tailgates are likely not going to carry a screwdriver needed to remove it. If you must, I guess you can even grind away the bolt of the clamp to make it much more difficult to remove with any tools.
I personally have a locking hard tonneau cover which prevents the tailgate from opening when closed. In addition, I also have an alarm with a shock sensor. You may also want to consider getting a security system is crime is really that bad in you area.

I have just one question where do you live? i live in Eastern North Carolina, and i have never heard of such thievery until i found this great web site. guess its not a big problem here.

I found the Pop N Lock..$30 from TruckGadgets.com. It has yet to arrive (should have just got off my duff and went to get it, they are right here in Dallas..dummy!) Anyway, I am getting an alarm on the truck (aka security system) when I get the funds. Right now the lock was the cheapest thing I could do. I use the tailgate to do courier work so it isn't opened a lot or that frequently, but I definitely do not have time for the screwdriver idea, lol. I promise I will post back once I get the lock installed and such. I will see kontai how it does with my paint job. Maybe I will find an improvisional way to protect it...eesh! Thanks to everyone that replied.

Get a hose clamp with a hex head screw and turn it downwards so you can only tighten/loosen it with an open-end wrench of the proper size. Any tailgate thief sees that, he is going to just slam the tailgate on your truck and move on to the next one.
