I've never heard of a sterling limited slip working well, even when new. New friction disks, and not too much friction modifier might help. I've heard all kinds of different ideas for making them work well, but never heard of anyone that's had good luck actually making one work well.
Some mustang guys have suggested soaking the friction disks in modifier, but not using modifier in the gear oil. The sterling is similar to the 8.8 in function.
If I was going to take one apart, I'd bite the bullet and put in an aftermarket locker.
Mine went out at about 35-40k, in-fact it never really worked worth a crap.
I changed the fluids with Ampsoil and added modifier to mine around 50K. It worked better for about 3k.
Then i got the clutches repacked at around 65K and that lasted about 5-10k.
I finally gave up! My suggestion is to save the money and get a real LS unit or the locker put in. All the people that I know that went that route were the most satisfied. I would budge and bye one now but I already spent a couple hundred fooling with cheap alternatives.
Lesson learned- I 'll put a new unit in my next SD.
It seems like there should be a way to rebuild the sterling ls to work. It's a shame really, as built it's a useless option in virtually every circumstance.
Maybe ford will offer a locker as an option some day.
