Hi, Ford Lovers! My name is Carmody, and I live in Wichita, Kansas. I test drove a '65 F-100 last night, and I'm thinking of buying it. Is there anything specific I should look out for in this model?
It has a 352-V8 (owner claims it's original, but who's to say?) with exhaust manifold leaks (nothing too worrisome), the brakes are tired and pull a bit, and the clutch will probably need replaced soon. It is impossible to shift down into first if the truck is in motion at all, but goes into gear fine at a stop light. (This is not unlike my '63 Rambler American with 3-on-the-tree.) The truck was hit in the front fender/headlight by a small car recently, but none of the metal work interferes with the tires or steering.
The guy wants $500 for the truck, and I'm thinking of dickering up from about $350. You guys are the experts here...any advice you can give me in this situation? I really appreciate it, and thanks in advance. I can be e-mailed at nerv0usreNo Email Addresses In Posts!) or carmody@kcisp.net.
Hi Carmody, welcome to the boards....If you have a granny 4-speed trans, that will never go into 1st gear while moving. If you do have a 3-on-the-tree, then you most likely have a syncro problem in the trans. As for the price, I am not an expert, but out here in California, 500 bucks ain't too bad for that.

Thanks for the reply. It is a four on the floor with stump-pullin' low gear. I figured that was the deal, pretty much. I think I'm going to shoot him an offer this afternoon...I'll post either way!
352 V8. ah yes, the good ole FE block if I remember right. My first truck had a 360 in it (also in the FE family) and had an exhaust manifold leak as well. apparently, this was just something these blocks were known for. when i called around to shops to have it fixed, some flat out refused the second i told them which engine it was. go figure. anyway, as far as the price goes, guys that sell trucks for $500 are the reason i can't get rid of mine for a grand. if it runs and doesn't have rust holes you can see through, i'd buy it in a heartbeat. you can't break those FE blocks.
