I posted this on the audio forum but didn't get much response. Has anyone had this problem:
"I have an '00 Expedition with the Mach audio system. The FM works fine, but the AM doesn't work too well. Basically you can crank up the volume and hear a very faint AM broadcast. It seems like there is no AM antenna. I don't know how long it has been like this. I don't use the AM much but would like to fix it for hurricane season in Florida. Known problem? Anyone have a fix?
It sounds like you may have corrosion on or in your antennae. I had the same problem, I pulled the radio and at the back of the radio where the antennae connects, was all rusted. I pulled the antennae out of the radio and cleaned all the rust off and got my AM back. If its not rusted there, it could be rust in the cable itself...so you may have to replace the cable. I got my info about this problem from a guy who works at www.radiosandmore.com. He was pretty well informed on how to deal with that particular problem.
Thanks for the response. So is the AM antenna separate from the FM? I have only had this radio out once a long time ago. But I only remember seeing one antenna wire, the large coaxial type.
nope...same antennae..its just that AM is more finicky than FM. When mine was corroded, you could barely hear the station...lots of static (my wife listened to AM in the morning for traffic). When I cleaned it, the reception became 90 percent better though I think I still need to replace my cable.
I actually found corrosion running up the coaxial antenna cable in my truck. I spliced the bad section out because I wanted to get the radio in and the truck back on the road, but replacing the cable would have been the better move.
