it's very true. broadband is becoming something everyone is getting if possible. The price has come down to be better than competative. As far as building a computer for cheap, check out www.pricewatch.com That website watches all of the computer parts websites and finds the cheapest one, and reports it back to you. I'm going to get a Motherboard/CPU combo Athlon 64 3400 for a little over 200 dollars.
I built my computer as I will not/cannot tolerate the crap of the shelves of box stores, it's fast, and I have cable (4Mb dl/384Kb ul). I buy and sell on Ebay and all is just fine. If you're having problems buying on Ebay, maybe go to a friends house for the auction and use the strategy called "sniping". For example, #4527072214. Make use of incremental bidding too.

I built my computer as well, though purposely for gaming The Cable connection allows for surfing the web super fast Ebay auctions are great becuase I can refresh as fast I can hit the button in the last seconds of the auction time and rebid if necessary.
