I have a 99 F-150 with about 150,000 miles on it. I am getting a P0171 code from my OBD II port. I had it checked at AutoZone. They couldn't tell me which sensor it was, just bank 1. I know that bank 1 is the passenger side but it didn't list either upstream or downstream. I thought about swapping the sensors around with each other to see if the code changes from bank 1 to bank 2 and then I would know if I have a faulty sensor. Does anyone know which one the P0171 code usually reports as bad?
Hello, P0171 is for Bank #1, that is where no. 1 piston is. My 5.4L it is on the passenger side, so that is where the 02 sensor should be.

Check PCV valve hose for leak causing unmetered air into engine causing lean code which right oxy. sensor sends pcm- now if you had a HEGO not switching you might swap sensor from left to right sides
I have the same problem with my 2000 explorer v6. I was told to clean the mass air sensor and it might be a dirty fuel filter. neither fixed my problem. I am going to try this fix.
My F150 check engine light came on and I was able to use a code key to find out the problem codes. P0171 & P0174. There are articles online that show the number of things to check to try to find the cause and fix.
Q. I am a novice and have never worked under the hood of a car before. Is this something that is relatively easy to fix and can be done by me or should I take it to a mechanic. How much should a mechanic charge in CA?
If your sure you only have one bank causing the code then the issue is somewhat a special case.
Only one sensor is detecting excessive air.
That could be a leak in the exhaust tract for that bank somewhere ahead of the sensor, an intake gasket leak at one intake port only could do it.
Not to many other areas that would be peticular to one bank.
Air meters , hoses, throttle bodies etc are common to both banks.
Good luck.
