and dropping my current 46 ford truck project, which i figure will cost be about 10k to fix up the way I want it. The truck on ebay i figure i could get for 2000 - and it already looks pretty good and runs. Should I get this - anyone see anything in the pictures that I can't - because to me this truck looks like its in pretty good shape. I'm going to look at it tommorrow, but any advice would be a great help, since dropping my other project is a pretty big decision.
I can't get the ebay link to work - it always tries to take you someplace else - does everyone else have the same problem? Anyways, what you need to do is copy the following link and paste it straight into your web browser, instead of clicking on it - which doesn't seem to work.
I saw the truck. It looks pretty nice. I searched for Ford F-350 on ebay motors and it came up. It is cheap right now but no one has met the reserve. Good luck, go for it!

for anyone that wants to take a look...thing is that I am probably going to go check it out before the auction ends (hopefully, guy hasn't called me back yet) and if I do, I'll probably try and get it from him there outside of ebay - so what should be a reasonable price to pay for this truck?
It's sometimes hard to judge the body condition from the photos, and always hard to judge the mechanical condition. Given the experience I'm going through with my truck project, if the body looks as good on close inspection as it does in the photos, I'd be pretty surprised if it went for as little as $2,000. 'course, it IS in California where there are dozens of these older trucks with NO rust just parked in fields and junkyards - not like here in the rusty midwest. Just arid climate envy on my part I guess.
The mechanical stuff can cost you to fix up - but I don't think it will be as much as fixing a beat-up body, unless you want to do a LOT of body work yourself. If the body is in really good shape on close inspection, I'd pay $3,500 for it here in Ohio. That's assuming I didn't already have a project truck, or my wife was willing to let me have two (yeah right ). I'm guessing I would make up the $2,500 difference between that price and the $1,000 I paid for mine easily given the much better condition of the truck on eBay.
I saw the ad, it's pretty clean from the photos, but I agree, you really need to be able to inspect it closely. I paid 400 for my '54 F-350, and drove it home. His info is off too, he says it's all original with a 292. Vin code breaks down to a 239, not 292. I'd expect to pay $2000-$2500 if it's as nice as the photo shows, but if it's in need of tlc like madathlon says, then I wouldn't pay more than a few hundred. My '53 T-800 cost me $100 bought a cab and fenders and chassis basically. My '53 F-600 was $250, needs complete resto, but all complete and running when parked. Except for the interior damage, and couple of fixable dents, it's very very presentable for being 52 years old. I paid $1000 for my '73 L-8000 dump truck, and it runs excellent, and is work ready.
I saw that it ended at $3K Reserve Not Met; quite a few bids and bidders. Have you gone to see it yet? Looks good, but I would go over the body carefully with a flexible (weak) refrigerator magnet, especially the rear cab corners and other usual rust sites. I like it; Good Luck!
$3k reserve not met, does the seller think hes got a near perfect restoration or something? I wouldn't pay 3000 for a truck that needs a full body off to be perfect. I just got a '54 F-750 for free, and I might have a '53 or '54 COE 600 coming for $500. It's in great shape, just needing paint to be as presentable as the one on ebay.
Seriously, the guy is full of crap - when I called him he told me that the truck was perfect and all of that - and he told me that his reserve price was 6000! Now granted, I think that old ford's are way undervalued - everyone getting their trucks for 500, 200, free, when they should be worth a whole lot more - but in this case the guy is clearly out of it - if its in need of a lot of work and not original as he said, its nowhere close to 3k or 6k or whatever the hell he is not going to sell the truck for...
I couldn't agree more. What a bonehead. An F-350 flatbed dually in near number one condition holds a collector value of around 6500 or 7000, it's been a few months since I looked, but they weren't worth that much.
At $6K, he will be the only owner. If it had a pickup box on it, it might be worth $3K, if it is as good as represented. The only way to know is to see it and drive it.
When I went to look at it.. It wouldnt start.. From what I seen its not worth my time of day.. The truck was sitting unevenly on a flat driveway.. IE twisted frame. And I offed to pay to have it towed and have it check out by a indepanded shop and he was like no way.. He didnt want a mechanic looking to close at it.. When I finnily left I gave him my business card and he got really upset to find out I was a ASE Cert Master Mechanic .. The truck junk as far as I could tell from looking it over.. He just looking for some sucker to make a fast buck from..
