By-pass oil filter system on V10 ???

Anybody use an Amsoil or Gulfcoast by-pass oil filter systems on their V10? I have two Amsoil systems right now, one on my 96 5.0l in a Ford van (110K miles) and one on my 00 5.7l in a Chevy van (77K miles) both using Mobil 1 synthetic oil. They seem to be working very well. My oil change interval is 10K miles with a new standard Motorcraft or Delco oil filter and the by-pass filter changes every two years. I'm in the market for a new truck and after reading some real horror stories at Forddiesel someone on an RV site said I should seriously look into the V10, seems you guys just love'em.

Seems like a neat forum and I look forward to spending some time here and reading!

How much clener does the by-pass keep the oil??? I run mobil one and interested in the bypass set up. right now I run a k&n oil filter and have not decided how long to run the interval. Mine is 01' v-10 with low mileage. Was wondering if anyone here was also into synthetics.........

Welcome to the V10 forum home of the infamous BSEG

If you lurk in the PSD forums here you will see a trend. However it is skewed because most folks on these sites are the ones with problems so you don't get the feel for the 95% of all Ford SuperDuty owners that have ZERO problems.

Still it is useful to note that the majority of PSD owners are posting questions about real serious and expensive problems.

Contrasted with the 5 year history of this forum. In the case of the V10 there are very few serious motor/power train problems.

one or two frukkled up bottom ends (spun bearings or broken rods)
5 or 10 blown spark plugs
200+ incidents of a shot Idle Air Control valve (IAC)
50+ incidents of Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve (EGR)

Less than a dozen folks ever posting about needing some sort of very expensive engine work.

Hell most of the time we are running off at the fingers about modifications to make them faster not how to fix broke crap.

Let that sink in a moment......

Alright I hope I painted a picture of a near perfect modular motor that makes great gobs of torque down low, and earns it's keep much more efficiently that a 498 cubic inch Chevy or 460 cubic inch big block Ford

The 3v V10 is an awesome power plant with 362HP and 455Ftlbs torque and the power curve is 1900 to 4800rpm and about as flat as is possible to tune for.

Any way Gary O in NC ask away and we will talk later about that Amsoil and bypass system (hint I am not a fan)

BSEG indeed!

Welcome to the site!

Heck, changing the oil is one of last remaining things one can do to these engines! It's only 6 quarts and easy as heck to do. For me, it's fresh 'blood' every 3 months or 3,000 miles.

BTW, what RV do you have? I've got a 26 footer that is heavy because of the three slides. The V10 pulls it just fine- at least around here.

Yes, I do think that the by-pass filter system does keep the oil cleaner. OEM quality full flow filters only filter particles down to around 20-30 microns. Most of the after market by-pass filter systems filter go down to 1 micron or less. The systems I have talked about use a quality cartridge filter. I have heard of ones that use a roll of toilet paper or paper towel, but I'm not sure if I would trust them. The cartridge filters only cost around 10-30 dollars depending on manufacturer and is not that big a deal. I got involved in these because we keep our vehicles for a very long time. The Ford van is a 1984 model with a new engine installed in 1996, it has over 300K miles and works just fine. Our Buick is over 10 years old and works just fine. If we do buy a new Super Duty it will probably be the last big truck we buy as I'm near 50 years old. We put our money into different areas than most people so we just don't replace our vehicles every 4 or 5 years.

Thanks for a welcome to the site!

Right now we have a camper van (Chevy 3500) and it is getting a bit small for us. We have been talking about a good light weight truck camper, hence the excuse of looking for a new truck.

I do not work for any of these people, I do not understand why that would come up. I have a background in Electrical and Mechanical engineering and am presently working in small business networking.

I have heard good things about OilGuard also.

It came up because part of your post seems to endorse the products as in you are a dealer. Not allowed to hock your wares in the forums.

I am 50 in a few days and have no illusions at all about this being my last truck ever. 40 more years is long enough for some day for me to be driving a Luke SkyWalker anti gravity motorcycle!

My opinion is that the very low cost of 3000 mile or every 90 day oil and new filter is SO low that no amount of high grade oil or snazzy filtering schemes will every pay for it self. My dealer changes my oil every 3rd month regardless of mileage for $19.99. Thats a whooping 80 bucks a year and only a mere $400 for life of the truck if I keep her a full 5 years.

My current 1986.5 Nissan Truck V6 motor has over 375,000 maintenance free miles on it and still starts first flip. The 18 year old truck is a rattle monster (body, doors and bed) and very old tech.

I have every receipt for every oil change from new. 72 oil and filter changes cost a total of $1080 to date. Average cost of an oil change is $14.86 (I know every dime I put into this truck including finance charges. You would be very surprised to know how small my cost per day factor is).

I have owned one of every Nissan Z series cars since the 240 Z car and I do not want a 350 series. Several of them spent two 3 year tours of Germany with our family including the Truck. Brutal environment and speeds (grin)

When I had a German company build the crap out of my VG30ET (V6 turbo) the motor had 108,000 miles. Every single measurable internal component was too close to factory spec to need any refurb and there was ZERO ridge. When done, they gave me back a motor that had a treatment rivaling any thing Lingenfelter can do! (650HP in a 3400lb sports car is a LOT of fun on the autobahn!)

Only special care my motors get is proper break in and and oil and filter change every 90 days. Unless you own a 15 quart diesel motor this is extremely cheap maintenance.

PS I have owned three diesel motors, I am very familiar with expensive scheduled maintenance!
