1987 F150 2WD Automatic, city/highway driving 110 000km - no rust really well taken care of:
That said, my truck won't start. I was driving to mall - went off an uneven peice of the road (slight bump) and the truck just stalled. I costed into the parking lot in N trying to start but nothing. Once I had it in park I tried to start it again and still nothing. I thought it might be the fuel pump so I had my friend turn the truck to run (not turn over) and I layed under to listen. I thought I could hear a slight click but no hum like usual - so I thought I confirmed the fuel pump. Then while waiting for the tow truck I got out my code reader to see if I could pull some codes - code reader won't do anything. I know it works because I used it only a few days before (its one from walmat that blinks an led to tell you the codes) Normally when I turn it to test I hear the fuel pump run for a sec - the led on the tester blinks rapidly for a bit, some relays go off - but now nothing. When the tow truck got there he tested for spark when I was turning the engine over and there is no spark either. I thought maybe some wires might have come loose - tried to check all the connectors under the hood, still nothing. Anyone have any ideas? I had the tow truck take it to a ford dealer (first time ever) because I have no clue where to even start. I have until monday before they will look at it - which will cost $100 - can anyone help me save my truck from the dealer?
Thanks guys!
Kirk
Not sure if you model has EFI, but there is a fuel pump shut-off switch under the dash probably on the left side under the steering column. It has a reset buttom. The manual states that it can be tripped by a pot hole as well as a hit in a accident.
did you check fuel relay? on an 87 i am not sure but on my 94 there is a main power box under hood. it has a maxi fuse as well as a relay for fuel pump.
If it has a fuel cut-off switch, its either where zoom said it is or its behind the passenger-side kick panel. If that isn't it, you may want to check grounds next. Check the ground for the computer. Its on the driver-side fender near the back.
Thanks for the info guys! I checked the fuel cutoff switch and it appeared normal - if it was on however (malfunctioning) would that cause my other symptoms - no sparks and no response from the ECU when trying to pull codes?
Thanks again!
Verify that the ECM is getting 12V with the ignition key. If it doesn't, check the ECM relay for proper operation, and also check the fuse (or fusible link) on that circuit.
My 88 Bronco has done a similar thing. Come to find out, it was a wire burned in two on the passenger firewall near the battery. On another occasion, I was changing the plugs & plug wires and when I finished it would turn over but never hit. After pulling the gas tank and checking the entire fuel system from the tank to the intake, checking inertia switch and changing relays only to find nothing, I had it towed to a shop. They checked all of the grounds for the electrical system and finally changed the processor twice (first one was bad) and that fixed it. Runs great now!!
Good luck,
Scott

The ECM relay and fuel pump relay are on a bracket attached to the rear side of the air filter box. The fuel relay is green and the ECM relay is brown.

did you just look at it, or did you push the button to reset it like you do with a circuit breaker?? there is no visual indication that the switch has been tripped.
