shocks and brakes

Hello all just a commit, I had a front end alignment done and I was told both the front and rear shocks were bad, (they were on the way out anyway) so I replaced them with Monroe gold Flex, seem to work prety good. But while doing the job I noticed the front brakes were about out then I checked the rear disc brakes and they were down aswel, so I replaced both with ceramic brakes and the brakes work alot better.

My question is anybody have any bad luck with these parts on your truck?

My factory shocks were completely blown out at 50,000. I replaced them with Monroe Reflex shocks. They give a rougher ride than stock, but they sure cut down the roll and dive and enable it to corner MUCH faster. I replaced those under warranty (lifetime) at 103,000, they had a bit of air in them, but still functioned pretty well. The factory brakes are another story. It has 4W disc and ABS. I changed the fronts at 82,000 and they had about 1/4 meat still left. They were worn even and the rotors were dead smooth. The rear brakes I changed at 112,000 and they were better than the fronts were when I changed them. I didn't put ceramics in either, but now I know that I should have. The factory brakes were better than the junk I have now.

Truck is a 99 F150 5.4L Auto 4x2 SCab Long bed with 133,000. Other than the shocks, I've only had two factory parts go bad, the TPS at 75,000 and the rear ABS sensor at 120,000.

Good deal, I just bought My 2000 F150 4.6 4X4 with 108,000 miles. It is not a bad truck I have fixed alot of things wrong and given it a full tune up. It is ment for me but also a back up truck for my wife while I go to Iraq. I am really impressed with the truck.

The slide rail on my caliper on the passenger side hung up at 148,000 miles or so, so I replaced that as well as the pads. The original pads wore out at 72,000 according to the previous owner. As far as shocks go, I just replaced the original ones a few months ago somewhere around 178,000 and gee what a diffrence that made.

Ive had good luck with Ford brakes. I had to repace the front pads at about 1150,000 miles. I went cheap and replaced them with Raybestos pads I bought for $40 at Farm and Fleet. Those pads lasted about 8 months and were shot (the front part of the pads basically crumbled), so I bought a pair of Motorcraft pads. They have been on my truck for over a year now and they still look like they are new.
I got 122,000 miles out of my rear pads and when the time came to replace them I went with Motorcraft pads ($45).
My shocks have 124,000 miles on them, and they are getting pretty soft. Im probably going to replace the shocks soon. Most likely I will put a set of Gabriels on them. I can get the Gabriels for $20 each (Motorcraft shocks cost $50 each).

jcstratt....just wondering if you would mind revealing the brand of pads you bought that you consider junk....i got to get some pads and of course want to stay away from "junk". i've heard good things about ceramics but i understand they not real rotor friendly(plus high$$)....and i'm really curious of the kevlar type pads, which i think are considered performance type pads. thanks...paul.... If you go to the dealer and ask for the least expensive pads that don't come with a life time warrenty then they are going to be crap pads, they will make alot of noise and not last very long. Always remembber you get what you pay for. The Ceramic brakes I bought cost about 69.00 a set and I am very impressed with them.

does the ceramic give you better more responsive stopping? (stop on a dime) and did you do just the front? i saw some Bosch ceramics on ebay for $49 + shipping, not bad, front only, but wear the rotors faster. i would presume about any brand of ceramics would be considered better quality than most of the "average" brands and certainly better thanthe carbon fiber junk. But thinking about it, i'd rather go thru pads than have to replace $80-90 front rotors(ea) plus replace brgs, seals etc. My front ones are already turned down to about max. But i'm really itching to try those ceramics...paul

I like their stopping power, I think it's better, If you are worried about the rotors then go to teh special dics for ceramics with predrilled holes. Talk about stoping power. $$$$$ though.
I put the ceramics all the way around.

then it sounds like ceramics should be used with drilled/slotted rotors for maximum benefit? this is obviously for heat dissipation, i guess the ceramics grip better therefore more heat. my concern is the cheaply made rotors i keep hearing about on fords starting around '98. really don't want to keep putting $$ in this truck....been thinking seriously about those s'crews...thanks..paul

Theyr'e not bad rotors. They do their intended job nicely. My 99's rotors (all 4) are still original with 133,000 miles. They're still smooth and don't vibrate at all.

I would have to agree my truck has 109,000 miles and when I put the ceramics on there was no issues didn't even have to turn them.
